The position of State Commissioner for Data Protection in Saxony-Anhalt has not been filled for many years.

Now there should be a new attempt.

Magdeburg - The black-red-yellow coalition wants to make a new attempt to fill the top data protection office in Saxony-Anhalt.

They relied on the lawyer Maria Christina Rost, who is currently responsible for legal affairs and public relations at the Hessian data protection commissioner.

This was confirmed by representatives of the CDU, SPD and FDP on Thursday.

The 48-year-old candidate has already introduced herself to several parliamentary groups in the state parliament in Magdeburg.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Saxony-Anhalt if the election goes,” Rost told the German Press Agency on Thursday.

She hopes to receive the necessary votes.

The election could take place in Parliament in April.

The State Commissioner for Data Protection monitors compliance with data protection regulations at authorities, companies and associations.

The replacement of the office has failed several times since 2018.

For the election, 49 votes are needed in parliament, the coalition of CDU, SPD and FDP together has 56. Most recently, in June 2023, the lawyer Daniel Neugebauer failed to receive the required majority in the state parliament in three attempts.

In the third round of voting, the lawyer received 48 yes votes.

Why there weren't enough votes in the end remained unclear after the secret ballots.

“The goal must be to clear this up,” said CDU parliamentary group leader Guido Heuer on Thursday.

The candidate made a very good impression when she was introduced, has a strong network and has been dealing with the issue of data protection for many years, says Heuer.

SPD parliamentary group leader Katja Pähle made similar comments.

“I assume that the election will be successful,” she said.

FDP parliamentary group leader Andreas Silbersack announced: “We will support you.” Rost has experience in the area of data protection.

“I am firmly convinced that she is the perfect candidate,” said Silbersack.
