The long-standing stalemate continues: a left-wing MP failed in the election as a member of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
There is not much time left until the end of the legislative period.
Erfurt - A few months before the end of the legislative period, left-wing MP André Blechschmidt failed in an election as a member of a committee that monitors the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
The 67-year-old did not achieve the necessary two-thirds majority in parliament on Thursday.
The members of the state parliament thus failed to end a blockade of the so-called parliamentary control commission, which is supposed to control the domestic secret service in Thuringia.
The committee should have been re-formed years ago, but candidates kept failing in elections.
The Office for the Protection of the Constitution was nevertheless monitored by parliament: the control commission from the previous legislative period was retained and continued to meet - but in some cases with representatives who were no longer members of parliament.
Domestic politicians had partly criticized this situation and called for a commission with new legitimacy from parliament.
In addition, the commission with its old composition will no longer be allowed to work in the coming legislature.
