The European Commission has formally sent information requests under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to Bing, Google Search, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube and the other for the spread of deepfakes and manipulations that can deceive voters.
Under the DSA law the community executive also asked LinkedIn for information on potentially targeted advertising based on sensitive data.
Regarding the information requested from the eight 'Big Techs', the Commission explains in more detail that the request for information concerns the risks linked to generative AI, such as so-called 'hallucinations' in which the AI provides false information, viral spread of deepfakes and the automated manipulation of services that can deceive voters.
Information is then requested from the eight groups and internal documents on risk assessments and mitigation measures related to the impact of generative AI, on electoral processes, dissemination of illegal content, protection of fundamental rights, gender violence, protection of minors, mental wellbeing, data protection, consumer protection and intellectual property.
The questions concern both the dissemination and creation of generative artificial intelligence content.
Companies must provide the Commission with the requested information by April 5, 2024 for election protection matters and by April 26, 2024 for other matters.
