The agricultural department of the municipal department, the Munich city estates, had a mishap in Bogenhausen.

She plowed a large meadow without permission from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.

So that herb gardens can be created there.

Resident Klaus Wörtler found the action in Denninger Anger “incomprehensible and frightening”.

This time a large meadow was not only mowed down, but also deeply plowed.

“The meadow has always been a habitat for plants, insects, mice, hedgehogs and moles and served as a hunting area for various species of birds, bats and foxes.

The radiology professor complained to the city that this intervention was certainly not compatible with the principles of nature conservation.

And found out that they wanted to create herb gardens here for Munich residents.

Many citizens want to grow their own vegetables

The city estates are thus following a request from the Bogenhausen and Berg am Laim district committees.

The new herb garden is also a replacement for the gardens on St.-Michael-Straße, which have to make way for the construction of the Berg-am-Laimer cultural community center.

There are also many citizens who would like to grow their own vegetables in the city.

Private vegetable cultivation instead of biodiversity, personal agricultural activity instead of a real experience of nature?

Wörtler got in touch with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the Climate and Environmental Protection Department (RKU).

Until then, they had no knowledge of the process.

Then it turned out: the city estates would have had to obtain approval beforehand.

The meadow is an agricultural area that was until recently leased to a private farmer.

He had partially sown grass and herb plants in the field.

This meant that the area had permanently become grassland five years ago.

However, when the city goods were returned, they were mistakenly assumed to be arable land.

Repainting was therefore prohibited by law.

If the correct status had been known, other areas for the herb gardens would have had to be looked for, according to the RKU.

Citizens demand: herb gardens should go elsewhere

The city estates have now subsequently submitted an application for so-called permanent grassland plowing.

As a replacement, arable land of the same quality and extent must be converted into higher-quality grassland.

A farmland in Trudering is proposed.

Herb gardens will continue to be created in Denninger Anger.

This doesn't help the local species, says Wörtler.

The herb gardens should go elsewhere.

The city contradicts that it is the only available space in the area.

Ultimately, herb gardens should be accessible to city residents without a car.

Now a ten meter wide strip is to be sown next to the herb gardens and exempt from plowing, where animals can settle again.
