Cars, cell phones and smartwatches can save lives.

If an accident occurs, they often automatically make an emergency call.

But the technology has its pitfalls.

It keeps triggering false alarms.

District - Incident on the Stuttgart motorway: A smartphone automatically makes an emergency call.

He ends up in the ILS in Fürstenfeldbruck.

The dispatcher doesn't know exactly what happened.

When he calls his cell phone, no one answers.

So he sends rescue workers.

The fire brigade and rescue service cover the area around the Fuchsberg car park.

The cell phone reported these coordinates.

But the helpers find nothing - and return without having achieved anything.

“We couldn’t determine what had happened,” says Peter Raab, deputy head of the ILS, about the case, which occurred almost two weeks ago.

He can only speculate.

Presumably the device fell down in the car, “thought” that its owner had fallen and made an emergency call.

This is how the dispatchers react

This technology is found in many cell phones and smartwatches today.

And again and again she plays tricks on the owners and rescue workers.

Recently, the number of false alarms caused by electronic helpers has increased, reports Peter Raab.

That doesn't paralyze the rescue system.

But every false alarm is annoying.

The dispatchers in the control center would then have to research, make calls and contact the fire department, rescue service and police.

And they then have to drive to the scene of the alleged incident.

Because more and more people are using the technology, Peter Raab assumes that the number of false alarms will also increase.

However, it can be prevented that the entire rescue chain is triggered.

Because the dispatcher always calls the number that made the emergency call.

The number that appears is 19222, the old emergency number.

Raab advises taking the call.

This way you can quickly give the all-clear.

There would be no costs either.

Still makes sense

In general, the rescue expert considers the technology to be useful - even in cars.

If, for example, an accident happens at night on a remote road that no one notices, help could be requested quickly.

Such e-call technology is already mandatory in new cars.

The technology is also becoming more and more sophisticated.

Some models could already automatically tell rescuers how many people are in the car.

This can be determined via the belt buckles.

Automatic emergency calls also make sense for cell phones and smartwatches - and not just for old or infirm people.

After all, even a healthy young athlete could fall or suffer a bout of weakness.

Raab's motto: It's better to have one emergency call too many than one too few.
