In order to posthumously honor former mayor Paul Krones, the central parking lot in Bad Wiessee will bear his name in the future.
The local council decided this.
Bad Wiessee – Mayor Paul Krones has done a lot for Bad Wiessee, the local councilors agreed on that.
Now that it is the 30th anniversary of his death, the community wants to erect a monument to their deserving former town hall boss.
The central parking lot will be called “Paul-Krones-Platz” in the future.
This decision was unanimously approved at the most recent council meeting.
Bad Wiessee: Honor for former mayor Paul Krones - new name for the central parking lot
The municipality of Bad Wiessee has already immortalized some of the names of former mayors: Sanktjohanserstrasse and Hans-Völkner-Platz in the Kurviertel (after Krones' predecessor in office) are named after former municipal leaders.
But the name of Paul Krones, who was a member of the local council for an impressive 42 years - from 1948 to 1990 - and led the town's fortunes as first mayor for 19 years, cannot yet be read on any public signs.
That should change now.
Mayor Robert Kühn said the idea came about while preparing an article honoring Krones in the February issue of the Wiesseer Bürgerbote.
They decided on a place that wasn't really established by name yet: the central parking lot, which is appropriate as the new location for the maypole.
Kühn is convinced that the renaming will give Bad Wiessee a further upgrade in addition to the new town center that is currently being built across the street.
Bernd Kuntze-Fechner (SPD), who himself worked with Krones, also praised the project as a good idea.
Kurt Sareiter (CSU), like Kuntze-Fechner, a colleague of the former mayor, emphasized that Krones had done a lot for Bad Wiessee: “He deserves this honor.”
With his energy and sovereignty, Krones was almost considered “all-knowing” when it came to the local needs.
Accordingly, the population was also satisfied with their mayor and his way of doing things.
Renaming of the central parking lot in Bad Wiessee: Criticism of the approach
Sareiter's parliamentary group colleague Thomas Erler was also pleased about the plan to honor Krones and permanently anchor him in the collective memory.
At the same time, however, he criticized the long period of time between the passing and the honor.
The idea of the tribute came about “rather by chance” through research on the 30th anniversary of Krones’ death.

After such a long time, the majority of younger citizens in particular can no longer do anything with the name.
In the future, Erler said, such honors should be initiated in good time, while the personality is still known to everyone.
“This should actually have happened about a decade after the person being honored died,” he thought.
Idea expanded: Signs should explain street names
Second Mayor Birgit Trinkl (FWG) suggested additional signs with explanations of the respective street names, an idea that she noticed in Tegernsee.
There, on streets named after well-known citizens of the city, street signs are supplemented by a plaque with biographical information.
Trinkl thought that this should also be taken up in Bad Wiessee, both for the future Paul-Krones-Platz and for existing signage such as on Sanktjohanserstrasse.
The renaming was ultimately approved unanimously and the administration was commissioned to take the necessary steps.
Mayor Kühn looked forward to the inauguration in the summer with confidence, which would certainly be accompanied by a small “celebration”.
