Large planting campaign planned along Weilheim's popular swimming lake

Highlights: Large planting campaign planned along Weilheim's popular swimming lake. A fully grown city tree would produce more than 1,000 kilograms of oxygen per year, providing air for more than 10 people. After a large city tree is felled, 2,000 new trees would actually have to be planted in order to immediately compensate for the previous ecosystem services. The city building department helped dig up the planting sites for the trees. Planting is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Friday morning.

The value of large trees is often underestimated by society, climate activists lamented during today's meeting of the Weilheim Climate Committee.

Now they plan to use fauna facts and actions to show the great value of organized greening measures.

Weilheim - Climate Commissioner Angelika Baur is a fan of trees and wants more people to recognize their value.

She compiled important, interesting and sometimes astonishing facts, which she presented to Weilheim city council members during this week's climate committee meeting.

“Of the 8,000 city trees, at least 2,125 were severely damaged or even had to be cut down during the last winter,” she explained.

A fully grown city tree would produce more than 1,000 kilograms of oxygen per year, providing air for more than 10 people.

Citizens should also not underestimate the provision of shade during hot months and thus the cooling of the ambient temperature, said Baur.

In addition, after a large city tree is felled, 2,000 new trees would actually have to be planted in order to immediately compensate for the previous ecosystem services.

Members of the organization “Weilheimer Agenda 21” are aware of the value of trees.

“We will meet on Friday at Lake Dietlhofer and plant many new trees there.

These trees were donated by a fellow citizen of Weilheim who spent a four-figure amount,” reported Joachim Michel, a member of the organization, proudly.

The relatively new environmental group “Weilheim can Climate”, which presented itself to the Climate Committee today, is also planning to take part in the planting campaign.

The city building department helped dig up the planting sites for the trees.

Planting is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Friday morning.
