For Legambiente "the unanimous approval received in recent days by the Justice Committee of the Chamber of the basic text of the proposed law on crimes against animals, which sees the Honorable Michela Vittoria Brambilla as the first signatory, is welcome. This is an important step forward towards the introduction of crimes against animals in the Penal Code, which are still missing, to guarantee through the law the protection provided for by Article 9 of the Constitution. At the same time it is also a positive response to what is foreseen, for crimes against wildlife and protected species, the directive on environmental crimes approved by the European Parliament on 27 February".
"Despite the good news - continues the NGO -, however, the first attempts to weaken the PDL in question with various amendments have already begun by the League and some Forza Italia deputies. In particular, the League requests that the rules in force apply only to 'pet' animals, a limitation not even foreseen by the pre-unification of Italy Codes, and to cancel the tightening of penalties against the killing of animals (from 2 years to 6 years) and the mistreatment of animals (from 1 to 5 years and with a fine)".
"Parliament and the government - underlines Legambiente - must not be fooled by these requests and keep in mind the strong, shared and widespread request of citizens to have an effective defense of animals that can no longer be postponed.
Legambiente will ensure that the presentation of amendments, instead of improving the text of the law, is used to empty the rules. The unanimous vote that arrived, in short, cannot be a 'smart' one".
