What future for Lyon airport?
The local residents' collective Corias (Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport residents' committee), which has worked since 1974 to defend against nuisances linked to the site's activities, would like the number of flights passing through eastern Lyon each day to be capped at traffic as it was in 2019.
A level still not reached four years after the pandemic, assures Le
Figaro
Jean-Luc Garcia, spokesperson for Corias:
“This is why we want to discuss this now.
We are currently at around 80% of 2019 traffic, which shows that there is no need to further increase the number of flights.
This necessity is even less great when we know that we must achieve certain objectives in the fight against global warming
.
Meeting at the Ministry of Transport
For local residents, maintaining this level, where projections anticipate a doubling of traffic by 2040, is the condition for a bearable daily life for the 250,000 people who live in the airport noise zone.
“Just 10% less can be felt in the quality of life for local residents.
Noise bothers people above 40 decibels.
All studies show that in very noisy areas, there are more cardiovascular diseases, stress, etc. Pollution is one thing, people's health is another
,” continues Jean-Luc Garcia.
A meeting is planned for March 28 with the airport management and the prefecture during which the collective will officially formulate this request with the hope of perhaps one day seeing it engraved in stone.
“Similar movements have been launched against all major airports in Europe.
Moreover, for two years, Schiphol Amsterdam Airport has decided to block its traffic at the 2019 level
,” concludes the spokesperson.
On Friday, members of the French Union Against Aircraft Nuisance (UFCNA) must be received at the Ministry of Transport in Paris in order to make a similar request for all French airports.
Contacted, Lyon airport did not wish to comment.
