A green path outside the walls of the excavations was inaugurated on March 14 by the director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, on the occasion of National Landscape Day.
The itinerary, from Piazza Anfiteatro, opens with an avenue of almond trees in bloom and the profile of Vesuvius in the background.
The route skirts the external perimeter of the Amphitheater up to Porta Sarno, entering Via dell'Abbondanza.
An alternative itinerary in the greenery, inclusive and accessible to all, in the landscape of history, for a Pompeii which - recalls Zuchtriegel - "is not just an open-air museum".
Seven thousand plants installed.
Maintenance is guaranteed with the collaboration of the children and operators of the Il Tulipano Art Friendly social cooperative, which assists young adults with autism and cognitive disabilities, who have been collaborating with the archaeological park for over a year in fruit and vegetable harvesting, production of jams and fruit juices, design workshops.
The planters - choosing varieties attested in Roman times, according to the reconstructions of studies on the naturalistic components of the ancient landscape - followed only one rule: they let themselves be inspired by the charm of the place where they placed around 400 holm oaks, plane trees, tamarisks, elms, oaks, creating the landscape with white pebbles, staking with river reeds and raffia bindings which have formed patches and clearings with rose bushes and strawberry trees, but also myrtles and mastic trees.
