The teleprompter is broken, the moderation sheet has disappeared: RTL anchorman Peter Kloeppel has been haunted by nightmares at night for 30 years.

Cologne – “It’s 6:45 p.m. – here is the news on RTL.” Peter Kloeppel greeted his viewers with these words for more than 30 years.

This will end at the end of August.

As it became known on Tuesday, the 65-year-old and his colleague Ulrike von der Groeben will be giving up moderation of the news program “RTL Aktuell” in a few months.

Peter Kloeppel quits “RTL Aktuell”: “That’s good then”

In a

interview, Peter Kloeppel explained his decision: “I'm turning 66 this year. That's good then.” The RTL anchorman announced that he wanted to live mostly in the USA in the future in order to have more time with his wife and his family To be able to spend my daughter.

Kloeppel has been married to the American television producer Carol Sagissor since 1993.

Their daughter Geena (27) lives in New York and works as a musician there.

But what's next for the TV journalist's career?

Peter Kloeppel emphasized in the interview that he no longer wanted to take on a daily moderation role in the news.

Instead, he plans to film projects like the investigative series “Transilluminated” from time to time.

RTL anchorman Peter Kloeppel suffers from recurring nightmares

The Frankfurt native has been the chief presenter of “RTL Aktuell” since March 30, 1992.

Over the years he has always prepared meticulously for work.

The reason: As he now openly admits to

, he is haunted by nightly nightmares on vacation and on weekends off.

“I have recurring nightmares that revolve around moderating,” says Kloeppel.

“It's 6:45 p.m. - and I realize: I'm not in the studio, but somewhere else.

Or I come into the show and all the preparation is suddenly gone: the prompter isn’t loaded, my notes aren’t there.”

He now manages to calm himself down even during short periods of wakefulness, explains the former editor-in-chief of the Cologne private broadcaster (2004-2014).

“Then I say to myself: Don’t worry, everything is fine.

You're not in the studio - you're in bed.

You’re wearing pants too, your teeth are still in, everything’s fine.”
