Merz or Söder?
The question about the Union candidacy for chancellor seems to be clear.
But Armin Laschet doesn't believe that Söder will give in, as he explained to Maischberger.
Berlin - Armin Laschet (CDU) can sing a song about what it's like to be the Union's candidate for chancellor and then have to deal with CSU boss and Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder.
In the 2021 federal elections, Laschet lost so many feathers in the internal party duel with Söder that he was unable to prevail against SPD candidate Olaf Scholz.
Today Laschet is a normal member of the Bundestag, but is still a sought-after guest on political talk shows and someone who often finds the right words on current issues.
Recently, a fiery speech from him in the Bundestag about the AfD went viral, and many users celebrated him for his words.
Laschet is asked by Maischberger about Söder and his ambitions to become chancellor
The CDU politician from the Rhineland was also a guest on the ARD program “Maischberger” on Wednesday evening (March 13th).
Moderator Sandra Maischberger asked him about the rise of the AfD in Germany and what role the CDU/CSU plays in it, about the Taurus debate within the traffic light coalition, and also - how could it be otherwise - about Markus Söder.
Maischberger played a scene from a press conference: Söder and CDU leader Friedrich Merz introduced Ursula von der Leyen as the Union's top candidate for the European elections.
Söder was also asked by a journalist whether he would run against Merz as the Union's candidate for chancellor.
Söder answered as evasively as he did flirtatiously: “I don’t understand you at all, we have now solved the K question” – and then added: “Ursula von der Leyen is supposed to become Commission President again, so we have already decided the K question. “

Does Merz have to dress warmly?
Laschet laughs at Söder's comment on the Chancellor question
Laschet had to laugh heartily when watching the scene.
“If he talks like that, does Merz have to dress warmly?” asked Sandra Maischberger.
Laschet initially tried to get a diplomatic answer.
“The question will only be decided after the three elections in the East,” he began – only to add, with significant meaning.
“But I have also heard many of the sentences that you hear from the Bavarian Prime Minister.”
Laschet then explained in more detail what these sentences were: “My place is in Bavaria”, “As Bavarian Prime Minister you are expelled”, “The CDU has the first right to make proposals” – you can now hear all of this again from Markus Söder.
For Laschet it is therefore clear: Markus Söder is definitely “in the race”.
Laschet warns of a new power struggle between the CDU and CSU
But everyone learned from the Union power struggle in 2021 that the question of the candidate for chancellor had to be “solved amicably,” Laschet added.
“Because divided parties do not get elected.”

Söder's ambitions to become chancellor were also thoroughly targeted at this year's Nockherberg Singspiel.
In the end, Söder let “chief doctor” Merz go first - but after an “amputation” of the traffic light coalition, he woke up as the new chancellor in a nightmare.
