The date is set: the funeral of Saman Abbas, the young woman of Pakistani origins killed by her family in May 2021 for opposing a forced marriage, will be celebrated on Tuesday 26 March in Novellara.
This was announced by the Municipality of Novellara, which will proclaim city mourning for that day: a minute's silence will be observed in schools and flags on public buildings will be displayed at half-mast.
"To respect his request and above all to protect his brother Ali Heider, the short ceremony, which will take place in the Novellara cemetery, will, as already announced, be strictly confidential", says the mayor Elena Carletti.
The Municipality explains that the organizational aspects will in any case be evaluated next week by the Provincial Committee for public order and safety chaired by the prefect Maria Rita Cocciufa.
"Also in that context - continues the mayor Carletti - we will discuss the ways in which, once the funeral is over, we can allow the citizens of Novellara and all those who wish to pay their last respects to Saman".
"Saman, therefore, will remain forever in Novellara and in the hearts of all of us - adds the mayor - She will remain because of the profound pain that this tragedy has caused in all the people of Novellara, because Saman is our honorary fellow citizen and because she will rest forever in a place that of our cemetery which is particularly dear to us, between the area dedicated to children and the one that welcomes Augusto Daolio.
It will also remain through the fund that we have established in her memory to carry out concrete support actions and inclusion paths for women, of all ethnicities and religions, the first of which will start shortly". "Are we all involved?" will be a path 25-hour training course that will take place in Novellara, dedicated to social-health and school workers, law enforcement personnel, the third sector and the municipalities of the province.
"The objective of the course will be to offer concrete skills and tools to those who find themselves dealing with the issue of violence against women in intercultural contexts, with a particular focus on the fight against forced, arranged or early marriages", concludes Carletti.
The course - the first promoted by the Saman Fund - will make use of the skills of anti-violence center operators, expert trainers on these topics, and lawyers who deal with violence and migration.
