Homeowners and builders will have to comply with additional climate protection rules in the future.

The EU wants to introduce a solar requirement for roofs as early as 2029.

Brussels – The European Union (EU) has set itself the goal of making all buildings emission-free by 2050.

The plan is a central component of the climate goals.

This will also have an impact on German house builders in the future.

From 2029, all residential buildings will have a solar roof.

The EU plan to save energy in buildings has now overcome another hurdle when the European Parliament approved the “Directive on the energy performance of buildings”.

The initiative aims to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Each member state should draw up a national renovation plan.

Part of the plan also includes new energy classes for buildings.

EU plans to make solar compulsory for residential buildings as early as 2029

A crucial tool in the EU climate protection plans are photovoltaic systems on roofs.

These are primarily intended to generate electricity.

The EU also sees solar systems as an option for hot water generation.

In doing so, the EU wants to end dependence on fossil fuels and protect consumers from fluctuating oil and gas prices.

The solar obligation should therefore affect all residential buildings built from 2029 onwards.

If you already own a house, you don't have to install solar systems on the roof.

From 2033, photovoltaic systems must also be installed on all buildings that receive “major renovations”.

According to the EU directive, public buildings should be equipped with solar systems as early as 2027

Solar systems should be mandatory on existing public buildings from 2027 if it is “technically suitable and economically practicable”.

For new public buildings, the rules should apply 24 months after the directive comes into force.

However, with the approval of the EU Parliament, the directive is not valid.

First, the Council, which represents the ministers of the member states, must agree.

The nations then have to regulate implementation.

It will still be a while before mandatory solar energy becomes a reality across Germany.

The implementation could take up to a year, reported

, citing a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Economics.

Ahead of the EU: Solar obligation is already a reality in some federal states

In some parts of Germany, mandatory solar energy is already a reality.

New residential buildings in Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg must already have solar systems.

A corresponding regulation is planned in Bavaria, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein.
