In order to discipline speeding drivers and illegal parkers, the municipality of Otterfing has hired the municipal service center Oberland association.

The fines are still flowing in generously and are now helping to purchase two new speed indicators.

Otterfing

– Speed offenders leave a lot of money in Otterfing.

So much so that last year the municipality received significantly more money from fines than it transferred to the Oberland Municipal Service Center Association for monitoring.

Expenditures amounting to 21,000 euros were offset by income of 41,350 euros, as was announced on Tuesday (March 12th) at the meeting of the Committee for Building, Local Development and Transport.

The town hall is investing 4,600 euros from this “profit” in the purchase of two new speed display boards, which are to be set up at Holzhamer Bogen and in the Tegernseer Straße/Haidfeldstraße area.

The decision in the committee was unanimous.

The municipality not only monitors speed, but also “stationary traffic”, i.e. parking.

However, two years ago, the town hall halved the intensity of parking controls to ten hours per month - in favor of increased speed controls.

“It works quite well,” explained Mayor Michael Falkenhahn (SPD) in the committee, “I would like to leave it that way.” The reduced parking surveillance quota is enough for Otterfing.

Since speeding violations result in higher fines than parking violations, the municipality does not run the risk of slipping into the red when it comes to traffic enforcement.

“We don’t want to make any money from it, but it should remain at least a zero-sum game,” explained the mayor.

However, Georg Schlickenrieder (CSU) warned against losing sight of the parking offenders.

“We already have some problem areas,” he objected.

In the Pöttingerweg area, for example, it is not uncommon for people to park right up into the curves and junctions, “that annoys me”.

Falkenhahn also knew about problem areas in the “Bergviertel” around Wallbergstrasse.

“We always have the opportunity to report such hotspots to the inspectors of the special purpose association,” explained the town hall boss.

As Sabine Hüppe from the building authority in the town hall explains upon request, the parking inspectors are usually out and about in the commercial area and check that the maximum parking time in municipal parking spaces is adhered to.

However, it is less expensive for drivers when parking illegally than when driving fast.

The association's "trailer speed cameras" - in technical jargon, "semi-stationary speed measuring systems" - are regularly and most often located on the edge of state road 2573, which crosses the town from north to south.

“They’re switching sides now,” said Falkenhahn.

After consultation with the police, the mobile speed traps sometimes also guard Schulstrasse, Jahnsteig, Haidfeldstrasse or Staudenfeldweg.

Even if the distinctive speed camera boxes certainly catch the eye, they still catch a lot of speed offenders.

In 2022, this even gave the municipality a traffic monitoring surplus of 34,600 euros.

“We also noticed this in the audit committee,” explained Hubert Baldauf (Greens), “either people are driving more sinfully or the auditors are looking more closely.” The mayor definitely appreciates the “profit” decline of almost 15,000 euros from 2022 to 2023 as a success: “Apparently the educational measures are taking effect after all.”
