What's next with the four-track expansion in the northeast of Munich?

According to Bahn, the reaction in Berlin is crucial.

The tram turning loop in Johanneskirchen planned by the Munich Transport Company (MVG) will probably not last long.

The controversial project is to be dismantled later.

Norbert Barth, responsible project manager for major DB projects in southern Germany, reported this to the Bogenhausen district committee (BA) on the sidelines of a presentation for the railway plans in the north-east of Munich.

There is no order to continue planning

There is now a break in the planned four-track expansion of the railway line between Daglfing and Johanneskirchen.

“At the moment there is no order to continue the planning,” explained the coordinator for rail infrastructure projects in the east of Munich, Michael Hatzel, at the meeting.

We have now reached the end of the preliminary planning and, as agreed, our documents have been handed over to the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMDV) and the city for evaluation.

As is well known, the city prefers a tunnel on the route, while the BMDV only wants the railway to build above ground as the most economical option that can be approved (we reported).

When and how things will continue is unclear and depends on the reaction in Berlin, Hatzel told the BA.

“That could be 2024, that could be 2025.” So it will still take a while until a plan approval procedure takes place.

Only express S-Bahn can travel 140 kilometers per hour

However, the design planning will certainly go into the design planning with new train numbers, according to railway representatives.

Finally, a new forecast should be available by the middle of this year for the route, which is part of the route between the ports in the north and the Brenner Base Tunnel.

“But we don’t know the traffic figures yet.” So far, Munich has always been planned on the basis of the train numbers for passenger and freight traffic predicted for 2030 from the current federal transport infrastructure plan, although there has long been a forecast for the northern access to the Brenner up to 2050 with significantly higher values gives.

Barth revealed some interesting details when presenting the completed detailed planning for the track section.

So only the express S-Bahn to the airport will be able to travel here at 140 km/h.

Otherwise the speed cannot be achieved because of the stops.

Freight traffic should reach a speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

In addition, there should be switches between the freight and S-Bahn tracks so that in the event of a disruption, the S-Bahn can run on freight train tracks and thus maintain the airport connection.

S-Bahn stations will have central platforms

There will be central platforms for the three S-Bahn stations Johanneskirchen, Englschalking and Daglfing, as the S-Bahn will run between the freight tracks.

In the tunnel, all stops would be underground.

The level crossings on Brodersenstrasse and Daglfinger Strasse will be replaced by underpasses in the ground-level version.

“The barriers and traffic jams will then be history.” In Englschalking, an intersection structure could also be installed for the possible extension of the U4.

Controversial turning loop will be dismantled later

Regarding the tram turning loop, Barth explained that the railway would dismantle it.

Over the next few years, the MVG wants to build a tram route including a turning loop over a distance of around 700 meters between Cosimastraße and the Johanneskirchen S-Bahn station for around 60 million euros as a section of the future tram north tangent.

Residents are resisting this.

In the best case scenario, the tram could go into operation at the beginning of 2027.

Later she will drive to the urban development measure (SEM) area in the northeast.
