Hamburg – At 6.5 kilometers, it is one of the longest and one of the busiest streets in Hamburg.

But Kieler Strasse is also breaking records nationwide: after in-depth analyzes by Allianz Direct, it was declared the most dangerous street in Germany.

Last year, 53 accidents involving personal injuries occurred on the partly eight-lane main traffic artery - 48 with minor injuries and 5 with serious injuries - more than anywhere else in the country!

The most dangerous road in Germany: Analysis shows where injuries are most common

The road, which runs from Altona-Nord through the districts of Eimsbüttel, Eidelstedt and Stellingen, connects Hamburg with northwestern Schleswig-Holstein and also leads to the A7 as a motorway slip road.

Based on data from the Federal Highway Research Institute and the German Accident Atlas, Kieler Strasse will be at the top of the list of dangerous traffic routes in 2022, according to the Allianz study.

Followed by Frankfurter Allee in Berlin (49 minor injuries, 41 serious injuries, 8 accidents in total), Vahrenwalder Straße in Hanover (49/43/6), Brunsbütteler Damm in Berlin (45/36/9) and Mariendorfer Damm in Berlin.

There were fatal accidents on two other roads in Hamburg

The second most dangerous road in Hamburg is the An der Alster traffic route, located in the St. Georg district, with 31 accidents.

In third place is Amsinckstrasse (Hammerbrook), with 30 accidents and one death.

The only other fatal accident in the ranking occurred on the Reeperbahn, which ranks fourth overall with 27 accidents.

Overall, Hamburg is the federal state with the highest risk of accidents in road traffic

As expected, Berlin is dominantly represented overall with five streets in the list of the most dangerous German streets, while other cities only appear once in the top ten.

But the Allianz study showed that the inglorious title of “city with the highest risk of accidents” does not go to the capital.

In addition to being the city with the most dangerous road, the Hanseatic city of Hamburg is also the federal state with the highest traffic risk overall: In 2022, a total of 7,174 accidents with personal injuries were registered in the Hanseatic city, the highest accident rate in the entire country.

The increase was an impressive 15.1 percent, more than in any other federal state.

Accident atlas from the Federal Statistical Office shows: Hamburg is dangerous for road users

Hamburg is therefore the federal state with the most accidents per capita, namely 3.49 per 1,000 inhabitants.

This is clearly shown in the interactive accident atlas from the Federal Statistical Office.

Hamburg's street network is streaked with deep dark red.

This means that between 56 and 127 accidents involving personal injuries occurred on numerous traffic routes in the Hanseatic city last year.

In addition to Kieler Strasse, Stresemannstrasse, where Deutsche Bahn is currently starting the controversial demolition of the listed Sternbrücke, was among the top ten most dangerous streets in Hamburg.

A Senate inquiry last year also revealed that road users in Hamburg live dangerously.

According to the Allianz study, most accidents occur in the districts of Hamburg-Mitte (113 accidents) and Altona (104 accidents).

Not only did the number of cars involved in traffic accidents increase, the participation of cyclists also increased enormously.

In 2022, around 25 percent more cyclists and Pedelec riders were involved in traffic accidents in many places than in 2021.
