Many people are currently surprised that street lamps are on in broad daylight, for example on streets in Penzberg and Iffeldorf.

At Bayernwerk Netz GmbH we are aware of the problem - it is a Bavaria-wide problem.

Penzberg/Iffeldorf - Bayernwerk spokesman Michael Bartels told the local newspaper on Thursday that the reason was a technical error in the lighting control.

According to him, not only Penzberg and Iffeldorf are affected, but also many municipalities in Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate.

This has never been done on this scale before, said Bartels.

It will probably “take several more days” until the error is fixed.

Bayernwerk does not yet have a precise overview of which locations are affected

Bayernwerk Netz GmbH, which claims to be the largest regional network operator in Bavaria, does not yet have a precise overview of which towns and streets in Bavaria the street lamps light up during the day.

According to Bartels, there is corresponding feedback for the local area, for example for the Penzberg urban area, for Murnau, Eurasburg and - in the Weilheim-Schongau district - for Oberhausen.

Service workers are out and about to see where lamps are burning during the day, explained Bartels.

In this case, they would have to be switched off manually on site by the service technician; this cannot be done via radio control.

“It’s quite an effort,” said the Bayernwerk spokesman.

Entire communities are never affected, but only individual streets.

Bayernwerk rules out hacker attacks

As far as the disruption is concerned, the company has ruled out a hacker attack.

“We assume a software error.”

Technical error in the lighting control

According to the Bayernwerk spokesman, it began with major nighttime streetlight outages last Wednesday night due to a technical error in the central lighting control, which ensures that the lamps come on in the evening and go out in the morning.

The next day this apparently ensured that the street lamps were on during the day.

The Bayernwerk spokesman suspects that the control signal was either not sent or received incorrectly.

We are still troubleshooting.
