Every year, it's the same story.
A few months before the summer holidays, vacationers are rushing to the gates of town halls to redo their identity document, their card or their passport.
Except that, since Covid, the situation is particularly tense: the delays in securing an appointment and then in obtaining the precious keys have exploded.

Good news: 2024 marks the year of
“
return to normal
”,
according to Anne-Gaëlle Baudouin, director of France Titles (formerly national agency for secure securities, ANTS), interviewed by
Le Figaro
.
18 days to get an appointment
This “return to normal” means that it will now take
“on average 18 days to obtain an appointment at the town hall then two to three weeks to produce the identity document
,” explains Anne-Gaëlle Baudouin.
When in 2022-2023, catching up with Covid requires, with the craze for the new identity card, more practical, more aesthetic and more secure and the multiplication of online procedures (which require a valid identity document ), the deadlines had exploded and the application procedure could extend over several months.
In April 2023, for example, you had to wait on average between 66 and 69 days to obtain an appointment at the town hall, then 23 days to produce and have the identity document sent.
Emergency plan: objective achieved
Faced with this situation, which had put many travelers in difficulty, a “new emergency plan” was announced by the government in April 2023.
Elisabeth Borne was committed to allocating more resources to town halls, to increasing those capable of issuing identity documents, to adding new collection devices (new counters responsible for collecting fingerprints in order to produce identity papers ) in town halls and to increase the number of agents behind the counters.
A year later, the ax fell: objective achieved.
Anticipation, always queen
But although the deadlines have now almost returned to those we knew before Covid, Anne-Gaëlle Baudouin still suggests planning ahead to avoid finding yourself stuck with an expired title.
As a reminder, to renew your identity document, it is strongly recommended to complete a pre-request online on the France Titles website.
You will then need to provide several pieces of information.
Namely, the reason for renewal (loss, theft, expiry date of the card, etc.), your marital status, information on your parentage, your nationality and your address.
Then, to finalize the request, you will need to make an appointment at the town hall and provide a certain number of supporting documents.
