Like father, like daughter: Ever since Marei was able to try out dad Franz Wölfle's tuba for the first time, it has been her absolute dream instrument.

It was named instrument of the year 2024: the tuba.

Also to draw attention to them, because the tuba is considered a “shortage instrument”.

This means that only a few learn how to play.

District – For Franz Wölfle and Florian Hutter, the tuba was and is their absolute dream instrument.

Wölfle couldn't even speak properly when he told his parents: "Play Franzi Bombardon." At every performance by the Schongau city band, he stood in front of the tuba players with wide eyes, but back then the instrument was even bigger than him.

So it was time to wait.

He put the alternative recorder aside after a week.

It had to be the Bombardon.

“He annoyed us all for so long that when he was nine he finally had lessons,” says his mother Agnes with a laugh.

In the same year, the now 37-year-old was able to play in the city band's Advent concert.

And stayed there.

Tuba as instrument of the year 2024: “I always wanted to play it”

Florian Hutter also started playing the tuba at the age of nine.

His father, who was a tuba player with the Huglfing music band, aroused his fascination with the instrument.

“I always wanted to play it, but had to wait until I could wear it,” remembers the 28-year-old.

There was no alternative for him either, he didn't learn any other instrument beforehand and is still an enthusiastic tuba player in the local band to this day.

But what is the fascination?

What is special about the tuba?

“The weight is definitely not an advantage,” says Hutter and laughs.

Both tuba players agree on the plus points.

“The tuba is incredibly versatile, has an incredible range over four octaves and can be used in any style of music,” enthuses Franz Wölfle.

And Florian Hutter adds: “It is the foundation of all music, is always needed and is therefore an incredibly important instrument.” Even as a solo instrument.

“You don’t have to be three meters tall and weigh 150 kilograms to be able to play it.”

And according to the full-blooded musicians, another advantage cannot be denied: you make relatively quick progress in learning.

“You don’t have to be three meters tall and weigh 150 kilograms to be able to play it,” says Franz Wölfle, dispelling prejudices.

Because a skillful breathing technique enables even young girls to get decent sounds from the tuba.

The best example: Franz Wölfle's eleven-year-old daughter Marei.

She has been playing the bombardon for three and a half years.

“I tried it out with my dad and the tuba has been my dream instrument ever since,” she says with shining eyes.

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

She will have her first major appearance this year at the spring concert of the Schongau town band.

At this concert and the fall concert by the Huglfing band, everyone can see for themselves that the tuba is “so beautifully big and deep” (Marei Forster), that it “grooves brutally” (Franz Wölfle) and that it is a “ “totally griaby” (Florian Hutter) instrument.

That should no longer be underestimated.
