The police are taking stock of the accidents in 2023. There were 1,500 crashes in the southern district.

This resulted in damage amounting to 3.7 million euros.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen - There is a lot of traffic on the roads in the Oberland - accidents are common.

Overall, Lars Werner, traffic officer at the Tölz police station, is satisfied with the regional accident statistics for the past year.

Most importantly, there was only one fatal accident in the southern district in 2023.

As tragic as the case is, the number of fatal accidents has reached an all-time low.

A fatal accident in the southern district in August 2023

According to the police, the accident in question occurred on August 28, 2023. That evening at around 9:15 p.m., an 82-year-old from Geretsrieder was driving his Mercedes on state road 2064 towards Königsdorf when he drove his car off the road near the Heilbrunner district of Unterbuchen came off.

According to Werner, there is still “a big question mark” behind why this happened.

The car rolled over and came to rest on its roof next to the road.

Two passengers (57 and 77) were slightly injured.

The fire department had to free the 82-year-old from the wreckage.

He was flown by helicopter to the accident clinic in Murnau.

There he initially seemed to recover from the consequences of the accident, but then died two weeks later in the intensive care unit.

Across the district, the number of traffic fatalities rose from four to eight

In the previous year, the number of traffic deaths in the areas of responsibility of the Bad Tölz police station and the Kochel police station was also at a very low level, with two cases.

In 2021 there were three fatally injured people on the roads in the southern district, in 2020 there were six and eleven in the two years before that.

In the entire Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district, however, the number of traffic deaths rose from four to a total of eight.

In the area of responsibility of the Upper Bavaria South police headquarters - the independent city of Rosenheim and the nine districts of Rosenheim, Miesbach, Berchtesgadener Land, Traunstein, Altötting, Mühldorf, Weilheim-Schongau, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen - there were 75 traffic deaths last year, seven fewer as 2022.

Number of accidents with personal injuries declining

The number of accidents resulting in personal injury has also fallen in the southern district: from 259 to 241 - a decrease of 4.7 percent.

55 people were seriously injured - compared to 74 in the previous year - and 266 were slightly injured (2022: 250).

All in all, the number of registered accidents remained almost the same.

It was exactly 1,500, the year before it was 1,483. The property damage totaled around 3.7 million euros.

According to Werner, this calculated number is only based on the police's initial, cautious estimates.

The actual repair costs are likely to be much higher.

What the Tölz police traffic expert is happy about: “The number of alcohol-related accidents has decreased massively.” The number fell from 31 to 19. “My impression is that awareness of this issue has increased,” says Werner.

There was also a clear decline in the number of accidents involving wildlife, namely from 201 to 158.

Also fewer motorcycle accidents

Another pleasing minus: In 2023 there were 54 motorcycle accidents in the southern district, ten fewer than in the previous year.

There were 21 seriously injured and 36 slightly injured (2022: 22/41).

This development is partly due to the fact that, as reported, only twelve motorcycle accidents were registered on the Kesselberg, which is fewer than the average in previous years.

Since 2023, there has been a ban on motorcycles traveling uphill on this winding section of the B11 every day between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Werner announces that the police will continually monitor this regulation again this year.

The Sylvenstein will also be targeted as a possible alternative route for many motorcyclists.

At the end of the motorcycle season, an assessment will be made of what the new driving ban has achieved.

Accidents involving Pedelec riders have also been considered a problem area in recent years.

Judging by the number of accidents, users now seem to have adapted better to cycling with electric assistance.

In 2023, 25 Pedelec accidents were registered in the southern district - compared to 40 in the previous year.

The number of injuries fell from 38 to 25 (including six seriously injured, previous year: 13).

Werner assesses cautiously: “If the numbers hold up like this this year, then I say: Yes, that is a trend.”
