The Ristorante Bella Italia at Stachus used to be popular, but it has now closed.

Now neighbors are raising the alarm: it stinks of rotten food and urine.

For several decades, Bella Italia on Herzog-Wilhelm-Straße was a popular, inexpensive pizzeria in the old town.

Those days are over - the restaurant is permanently closed and was recently emptied.

What remains: stink and trouble!

Since then, spoiled food has been rotting in the open and people have been using the yard as a toilet.

Employees at the café opposite now sound the alarm.

Jacob Hagenbuchner, senior manager of the Café Bohne & Malz on Sonnenstrasse, told tz on Friday that the situation was now almost unbearable: full garbage cans and an old freezer remained in front of the empty pizzeria and were thrown over.

Salmon, meat and vegetables rotted there and smelled more and more every day, and people relieved themselves there.

“These are conditions like in the Bronx!” complains Hagenbuchner.

“It’s not just the smell.

We are also worried about an infestation of rats and mice.” The café employs a pest controller, but it has to cover the costs itself.

He and his son Tobias, managing director of the café, have already asked for help from several places: the district inspectorate, the municipal department and even the police.

When asked by tz, a police officer reported that officers were on site and that the Mitte district inspection and the municipal department had been contacted.

“It was promised that the problem would be taken care of immediately.” The municipal department told tz that it owned the area, but that it was leased.

“The traffic safety obligation and all other obligations relating to the building apply to the tenant of the property.” The municipal department “immediately asked the tenant to have the rubbish removed and to ensure orderly conditions”.

Hagenbuchner is now waiting – nothing had happened as of Friday afternoon.

The outdoor seating will be set up at Bohne und Malz at the beginning of next week.

Once the smell has hopefully gone away, you will be able to enjoy your coffee, cocktail and food outside again when the weather is nice.
