After discharging a 15-year-old girl who arrived at the emergency room of the Murri hospital in Fermo, the doctor on duty went to her home the next morning, once off duty, to check on her health conditions.
And in particular to verify a doubt about the need for hospitalization in neurology.
Hospitalization was then arranged and the teenager avoided serious consequences.
The health worker, Francesco Bernetti Evangelista, a retired doctor working with a cooperative that collaborates with the emergency room, defends himself: "I only did my duty, there was a situation that needed to be investigated which there had been no way in the emergency room to check thoroughly."
However, the story went viral, amidst messages of solidarity and praise.
"I have been a doctor for 40 years - insists Bernetti Evangelista -, I have operated on around 30 thousand people. I don't think I have done anything strange".
After 10 days of hospitalization and therapy, the fifteen-year-old recovered and was back on her feet.
The doctor instead returned to her work.
"Caring, dedication to a job that often becomes a life mission, professionalism".
Thus the Territorial Health Authority (Ast) of Fermo.
The story was highlighted in the national news, thanks to the diligence of the health worker: "after having visited and discharged a young girl who arrived at the emergency room late at night, he reached the young girl at home the following morning, once his shift was over, for further scruples. - explains the Ast - The patient had been affected by spinal inflammation and could have carried out further medical checks the following day but the doctor decided not to wait and to go to her residence and arrange for a new hospitalization in the hospital".
The Ast of Fermo congratulates the doctor, an example of dedication, - he continues - humanity and professionalism that go well beyond the mere work shift, underlining at the same time how the Fermo healthcare system is rich in many healthcare professionals, be they doctors, nurses or OSS, who use all their strength and abilities, even beyond working hours, to place themselves at the service of public health and the community on a daily basis".
"Commendable examples of doctors on the front line, starting from the Emergency Urgency, who often work under pressure and in a historical moment in which the shortage of doctors also weighs heavily, at a national level, starting from the Emergency Urgency".
"This specific case - concludes the Ast of Fermo - is one of the many examples that are often kept quiet by the professionals themselves due to discretion, humility and a spirit of service. To the doctor in question, who ended up in the news not on his own initiative, and to the many of his colleagues are an example of Fermo healthcare that is silent but constantly at the service of others, the thanks and esteem of the Ast of Fermo".
