Artificial intelligence is finding its way into the clinic

Highlights: Artificial intelligence is finding its way into the clinic. During an endoscopy, diseases of the digestive tract are detected using flexible optical and tiny microsurgical probes. If necessary, polyps can be removed directly from inside the body in a minimally invasive manner during the same examination. The new devices that are now in use at the Bruck Hospital also rely on artificial intelligence. A new CT device, which will also use artificial intelligence, is scheduled to arrive at the district clinic in April.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is on the rise worldwide.

The new technology is also finding its way into the medical sector.

The district clinic has recently started using AI-supported endoscopy devices.

The technology will soon support doctors in other areas too.

Fürstenfeldbruck – The starting signal for AI in the clinic was given in the department of gastroenterology and oncology.

There, new endoscopy devices are intended to improve the diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer.

The doctors in the clinic expect great progress.

“After the first examinations with the AI-supported devices, we are all thrilled,” says Dr.

Michael Selgrad, Chief Physician of the Department of Gastroenterology and Oncology.

The quality is impressive.

Probes

During an endoscopy, diseases of the digestive tract are detected using flexible optical and tiny microsurgical probes.

If necessary, polyps can be removed directly from inside the body in a minimally invasive manner during the same examination.

The clinic says that the doctor's experience and trained eye play an important role in reliably identifying abnormalities.

Image recognition

The new devices that are now in use at the Bruck Hospital also rely on artificial intelligence: image recognition software runs parallel to the colonoscopy, which also scans the surface of the inner intestinal wall, compares changes in the mucous membrane with a database and characterizes them in real time.

If she notices any abnormalities, the doctor will be notified by color-coding the area.

In this way, intestinal polyps could be detected and immediately evaluated even at a very early stage, when they would sometimes be overlooked by the human eye.

Security

“This significantly supports us as examiners in the approximately 4,000 endoscopies that we carry out every year,” explains the senior physician, Dr.

Alexander Hemmers-Schuldt.

“It also increases safety for our patients.

The more polyps – the precursors of a tumor – are discovered and removed during an endoscopy, the more the likelihood of developing colon cancer is reduced.”

At the beginning

The new endoscopy devices are probably just the beginning.

A new CT device, which will also use artificial intelligence, is scheduled to arrive at the district clinic in April.

Clinic boss Alfons Groitl sees other possible uses.

“AI is generally on the rise in medical devices and when purchasing we always check what the market offers and which functionalities are most beneficial for our patients and practitioners.”
