Highlights: AWO closes many daycare centers: providers want capital city allowance. Since November 2020, around 130,000 employees and civil servants in Berlin's public sector have been receiving the capital allowance of 150 euros per month. Affected parents or visitors should be informed in advance of the closures and also about options for emergency care in the day care centers, although this cannot be guaranteed across the board. The welfare association is active, for example, in child and youth welfare, assistance for the disabled and work for the elderly.

The Berliner Arbeiterwohlfahrt allows many daycare centers and advice centers on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The AWO protests against the fact that employees of independent providers do not receive a capital city allowance.

Berlin - The Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) in Berlin closes numerous facilities for two days.

Among other things, daycare centers and advice centers should remain largely closed on Monday and Tuesday, as the AWO Berlin announced on Thursday.

In doing so, the AWO is protesting against the unequal treatment of employees of independent providers compared to state employees, especially when it comes to the capital city allowance.

Against this background, a demonstration is planned in front of the Red Town Hall and the Senate Finance Department on Tuesday morning.

Other organizations from Berlin have also agreed to participate.

Affected parents or visitors should be informed in advance of the closures and also about options for emergency care in the daycare centers, although this cannot be guaranteed across the board.

AWO state manager Oliver Bürgel criticized the fact that there is still no solution to the capital city allowance for independent providers.

“The unequal treatment of employees of independent providers compared to state employees must now end,” he said.

Since November 2020, around 130,000 employees and civil servants in Berlin's public sector have been receiving the capital allowance of 150 euros per month.

The only exceptions to this are very high salary groups.

Recently, trade unions and associations of independent providers vehemently demanded that this capital city allowance also be paid for their employees because they also take on the tasks of state services and the common good.

According to the AWO in Berlin and its member organizations, around 8,500 employees are employed.

The welfare association is active, for example, in child and youth welfare, assistance for the disabled, assistance for the homeless and criminal offenders, work for the elderly, migration social work and care.
