Last April, a drunken father attacked an 81-year-old in his house in Hilgertshausen-Tandern (Dachau district) and hit him on the head with a heavy flashlight in bed.

He demanded money from him because he wanted to buy new alcohol.

The case has now been heard before the Munich II Regional Court.

The accused father of the family could no longer remember what he had done.

The incident shocked the community of Hilgertshausen-Tandern: When an 81-year-old was beaten in his bed one April night last year, no one would have believed that it was a neighbor who had beaten the senior citizen up like that.

In fact, it was a local father of three.

He has been on trial at the Munich II Regional Court since last week.

At the beginning he regretted the crime.

A neighbor provided the crucial clue

The police had been searching for the perpetrator for a month.

Without success.

Then a neighbor came forward who had become aware of a press call but didn't know whether to report another incident.

Shortly after the crime, he saw a fellow kindergarten father stumbling across his terrace at night.

He grabbed a bottle of beer from the outdoor fridge.

The clanging alerted the neighbor.

He wanted to follow the man on his bike.

Then he recognized him.

He shouted something after him and received a roaring sound in return.

Then the beer thief continued to sway.

The neighbor followed him to make sure that it was actually his fellow kindergarten father.

In fact, he opened the front door in the right place.

The accused perpetrator is a father of three

The neighbor struggled for a long time about reporting the incident to the police.

Then he spoke to the abused senior's son.

He told him - almost a little desperately - that the police had no leads, except that a beer bottle was found near the broken cellar window through which the thief had broken into the house.

The neighbor then called in.

Shortly afterwards, the father of three was arrested.

At the start of the trial he basically admitted the crime in the regional court, but could or only wanted to remember fragments.

On the day of the crime he drank a lot of beer, he read out a written statement.

About ten to twelve bottles.

“I can only vaguely remember.

At some point I stood in the bedroom and exchanged a few words,” he said.

"I'm totally shocked, I can't believe I did something like that to an old man." He was probably looking for supplies.

There was nothing left at home, he suspected.

From custody, he wrote an apology to the man and asked for financial compensation.

The 81-year-old accepted the apology.

He now lives in a retirement home.

He was already suffering from early dementia at the time of the crime.

Only vague memories of incident

According to the prosecution, the father hit him on the right side of his face with a large flashlight.

The elderly man suffered a fractured nose as well as bleeding wounds and hematomas and had to be treated in hospital.

“I’m sure I didn’t hit him with a flashlight,” said the defendant.

He couldn't say whether he brought them with him or found them in the house.

He also didn't know the whereabouts of the flashlight.

Since he was in custody, he has stopped drinking.

“Currently, thinking about the taste of alcohol makes me sick,” he claimed.

He never wants to drink a drop again.

In fact, he had often tried to get sober.

He once voluntarily admitted himself to an addiction clinic.

But the relapses came regularly.

He always combated everyday worries, such as financial hardships, with alcohol. The process is ongoing.
