The thermal tent that was supposed to be set up on Hermann-Köhl-Straße last year to accommodate asylum seekers was never built.

Now the existing refugee accommodation is to be expanded to include an extension.

Landsberg - The city council unanimously approved a corresponding preliminary building request from the building owner at its most recent meeting.

This will be accompanied by an increase in the occupancy limit at the location to 215 people.

There are 120 places in the existing building, and the extension could accommodate a further 95 people.

Jost Handtrack, Commissioner for Asylum, Refugees and Integration, supported the project.

Since the location is in the commercial area, there are no neighboring residential buildings.

Shops and connections to the city bus are nearby, as is the district office's asylum center.

Care and security are guaranteed by the district office, as the occupancy numbers will be the required size after the extension.

Overall, this means an improvement in the situation.

limit exhausted

Handtrack also pointed out that the previous upper limit for accommodation had never been exhausted.

“So far there have only ever been 90 people there.” The housing market will also be relieved.

“The district office does not offer apartments on the free market for asylum seekers.”

Karl Egger (Greens) thought the project was good in principle (“I'm happy if the gymnasiums can be kept free”), but demanded that deficiencies in the existing building be eliminated.

“Everything is in an indescribable condition,” said Egger after a visit to the site.

“I feel sorry for the people there,” said Wolfgang Weisensee (Landsberger Mitte).

The owner must “prove that he is creating decent accommodation” and not just “adding value”.

Weisensee was also worried that the site could later be converted into workers' accommodation.

This is not possible, assured Claus Müller from the city's building administration.

“No permanent residential homes can be created in the commercial area.” Use for social purposes such as accommodating refugees is only permitted in exceptional cases, although the terms would certainly be “very long”.

Mayor Doris Baumgartl (UBV) explained that the conditions in the building would improve with security and support staff permanently on site.
