Almost 150 senior citizens came to a Caritas information afternoon at the Catholic parish center on Wednesday.

The focus was on the tense financial situation of the seniors' meeting and the options for action with which the association wants to secure the facility.

Starnberg – There hasn't been a meeting like this in Starnberg for a long time.

Almost 150 seniors came to the Catholic parish center on Mühlbergstrasse on Wednesday afternoon to find out about the current situation at the seniors' meeting.

The crowd was so big that the doors to the foyer had to be opened so that everyone who was interested had space.

The chairman of the Starnberg Caritas Association, Jan-Peter Schacht, then figuratively let his pants down.

His core message: “The times are challenging and exhausting, but we, the board, the Caritas Council and the support group, want and will do everything possible to maintain the seniors' meeting.” As reported, the financing of the facility is in Ilse-Kubaschewski -House on Hanfelder Straße is anything but safe beyond 2024.

The numbers

According to Schacht, the annual budget of the seniors' meeting is around 430,000 euros - including 350,000 euros in personnel and material costs as well as 80,000 euros in rental costs.

The city of Starnberg is currently covering the entire rental costs as well as 106,000 euros of the material and personnel costs.

According to Third Mayor Christiane Falk, the rental agreement runs until December 31, 2026, and the contract to cover costs runs until October 31, 2027. “We stand by that.

The city is fulfilling its contracts,” emphasized Falk – but at the same time asked for understanding that Caritas’ request for a 75,000 euro grant was rejected.

“We are reducing all subsidies to 60 percent, so we can’t add anything on top of that,” she explained.

The remaining 244,000 euros are divided as follows: 110,000 euros in the costs of the participants, 20,000 euros a private donation, 10,000 euros in a subsidy from the Seestern association for neighborhood assistance, 5,000 euros in a subsidy from the municipality of Pöcking, 4,000 euros in a subsidy from the municipality of Berg – and 95,000 euros in deficit compensation from the Diocese of Augsburg.

But they have already announced that they will cut their contribution by 17 percent next year, said Schacht.

The attempt to get other communities to contribute financially failed.

Written requests from Caritas were rejected - if at all - by the town halls.

Only 61 percent of the 1,000 guests each year come from Starnberg, the remaining 39 percent come from other communities, explained Schacht.

“Talk to your mayor about it,” he asked the visitors from outside the city.

In general, he made several appeals to ask potential donors, foundations or other available opportunities for financial support for the seniors' meeting.

Uwe Rupprecht, the chairman of the newly formed support group, also recruited new members several times.

The measures

The Caritas leadership also wants to continue cleaning clinics to raise money.

For tax reasons, it is also planned that participants of the daily lunch will in future bill directly to the Scholler butcher shop, the cafeteria will run through a trust fund and participants on excursions will also pay directly to the organizer.

As a result, the Caritas association would no longer be a business operation at this point, which would simplify the use of donations from the support group, explained Schacht.

In addition, the range of more than 250 courses and events must be sifted through for optimization and adjusted if necessary.

Caritas managing director Ulrich Walleitner also brought three “options for action” into play: bundling all of the association’s services and resources in the Ilse Kubaschewski House (currently the Caritas office is on Leutstettener Straße, the annual rent there is 21,000 euros) , the continuation of the previous model including price adjustments and adjustment of the offer or a purely voluntary seniors' meeting (so far 150 volunteers are already working as group leaders, for example).

Schacht remained confident until the end: “We are sure we will do it.”
