Free parking in Kaufbeuren should be retained.
The parking garage at the Kunsthaus is being extended, and the Sparkasse still wants to think about this for the parking garage south.
Kaufbeuren
– The campaign has been running in the parking garage at the Kunsthaus and the Sparkasse parking garage south since April 2023.
The Kaufbeuren property management company had already presented positive figures in December last year (we reported), and in the last finance committee, economic officer Andreas Bauer also presented an evaluation of the user numbers to the city councilors gathered there, who gave the campaign a positive rating.
Free parking in Kaufbeuren continues - increase of more than 30 percent
On Saturdays from April to December 2023, Bauer said in his presentation, 1,067 more drivers used the parking garage as short-term parking than in the previous year, which corresponds to an increase of around 33 percent.
The measure was well received, said Bauer.
There was also positive feedback from local businesses, along with the wish that the project should be continued, said the economic officer.
The fact that the planned renovation of the parking garage in question was postponed indefinitely due to the tense budget situation favors the continuation of the campaign, explained Bauer - of course with the proviso that no extensive closures have to be imposed there due to static complaints.
Free parking in Kaufbeuren continues – Sparkasse is still considering
However, it is currently unclear whether Sparkasse Allgäu (formerly Sparkasse Kaufbeuren) would also like to continue supporting the campaign in its “Parkhaus Süd”.
So far, the city of Kaufbeuren has compensated her for lost earnings on the free Saturdays, explained Kaufbeuren's mayor Stefan Bosse (CSU).
However, this will no longer be the case in the future.
The Sparkasse is currently still considering whether they want to continue to participate or whether they would rather get out.
According to Bauer, we are in close and good discussions with the financial institution, but a final decision from the savings bank is still pending.
The city administration prefers to continue to have the savings bank on board with the campaign, but would also let the project continue in its own parking garage without the financial institution.
