In the main Italian newspapers, the articles dedicated to the climate crisis are decreasing, but the advertising of polluting companies is increasing, while on the evening news the space for those who oppose the ecological transition is doubled.
This is supported by the new report that Greenpeace Italia commissioned from the Pavia Observatory, a research institute specializing in communication analysis.
In the third quarter of 2023, the main Italian newspapers published on average 2.9 articles per day in which at least one mention was made of the climate crisis, but the articles actually dedicated to the problem were less than half.
In the same period, according to Greenpeace, the dependence of the Italian press on advertising from the most polluting companies (gas and oil, automotive, airline and cruise companies) has reached record levels, with an average of one advertisement per day.
The influence of the economic world also emerges from the analysis of the subjects who have the most voice in newspaper articles on the climate crisis: in first place are companies and representatives of entrepreneurship (31%), which distinguish international (11%) and national (9) politicians and institutions. %) and technicians and scientists (11%).
As far as TV is concerned, in four months of broadcasts no news program has ever named anyone responsible for the climate crisis.
The narratives of resistance to the energy transition doubled compared to the previous analysis period, going from 9.7% to 18.4%.
According to Greenpeace, we read in a statement, it is "a symptom of the influence of politics and the control of the Meloni government on RAI".
As regards the most popular news outlets on Instagram, news on the climate crisis dropped from 4.1% to 2.6% of the total posts published.
