The owners of a home in northern Florida found human remains partially buried in the yard of their home while carrying out remodeling work, authorities said Friday.
The human remains, whose identity has not been established, were discovered with “their feet sticking out” of the ground, reported a spokesman for the sheriff of Duval County, where the city of Jacksonville is located.
The county medical examiner's office has the human remains in its possession and will conduct an autopsy, the spokesman added.
Police were called to the scene Wednesday at 6:48 p.m. ET, public records of the case show.
“They sent me (to the house) for an investigation.
“I observed two feet sticking out of the ground,” Officer Philip Massicotte’s report reads.
A woman who said she was in the house when the discovery was made told local news station News4JAX that the remains were decomposing.
"We were working inside the house and then the owner came up to us and said, 'Hey, there's something here.'
We have to call 911,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified.
“[The remains] were all black and so on.
But I guess it was because of decomposition,” he added.
“I just hope everything works out.
My reaction is that this is just crazy.
“I never expected something like this, especially in a house where I work.”
