A few days after the "XXIX Day of memory and commitment in memory of the innocent victims of the mafia", organized again this year by Don Luigi Ciotti and the "Libera" association, the Roma Tre University has decided to name 12 classrooms of the University to as many innocent victims of the mafia: a symbolic gesture, an indelible memory and a tangible commitment to remember and honor those who lost their lives due to a merciless cowardly crime.

The initiative will be illustrated on Monday 18 March, at 3pm with an event to be held in the Aula Magna of the University Rectorate (via Ostiense, 133), entitled "Roma Tre against the mafia".

After the institutional greetings entrusted to the rector, prof.

Massimiliano Fiorucci, and to the General Director, arch.

AlbertoAttanasio, and the introduction by Prof. Anna Lisa Tota, Deputy Rector, will be attended by Don Luigi Ciotti, President of Libera.

Associations, names and numbers against the mafias, VincenzaRando, Senator of the Italian Republic and member of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the phenomenon of the mafias and other criminal associations, including foreign ones, Nando DallaChiesa, President of the Italian scientific society for studies on mafias and anti-mafia (SISMA) and Honorary President of Libera, Paolo Borrometi, Co-Director of the Italian Journalism Agency, and Roma Tre student, Vittoria Podo.

The meeting is coordinated by prof.

Marco Catarci, Pro-Rector of the Third Mission.

Presenting the event, rector Fiorucci comments: "The university, as well as being a place of research and training, is also a space for education in democracy, citizenship and freedom. But there is no freedom without legality. Furthermore, it is the place to cultivate memory and make it operational. For these reasons we have chosen to name the classrooms of our Departments after the innocent victims of the mafia so that the entire academic community can commit daily to a fairer and more equal society. I want to thank the Libera association for this opportunity to share and for the extraordinary commitment it carries out ".

For his part, the General Director of the University, Attanasio, adds: "The memory of the victims will be a central element in the spaces of our offices: all the Departments have chosen to name the main classrooms of their structures. It will be evident to the students who frequent those classrooms the strength and conviction with which Roma Tre wants to keep this memory alive and fight against all mafias".

With this spirit, Roma Tre adheres, giving its patronage, to the "XXIX Day of Remembrance and Commitment in memory of the innocent victims of the mafia",

Don Ciotti, who will speak on Monday afternoon at the Roma Tre event, maintains that "the university classrooms named after the innocent victims are an important signal because through these names their memory is collected and preserved, to transform it into collective responsibility and commitment".

The importance of this message concerns first of all the commemoration of the victims and the expression of a profound and shared solidarity for their families.

Furthermore, fully responding to its institutional mandate, with this Roma Tre initiative, in addition to promoting the cultures of legality and solidarity, it intends to contribute to the consolidation of public memories in relation to the crimes of the mafia and wants to educate the young generations, present and future, so that they learn to oppose with firmness to all forms of organized crime and to work together to build a more just society.

Mafias represent a threat to democracy and civil coexistence.

Fighting them is a moral and civil duty that Roma Tre University does by placing itself alongside those who fight every day to combat this phenomenon.

"Roma Tre against the mafias" is a project that goes beyond the boundaries of the University and its academic community: it is an invitation addressed to everyone, so that we can unite in the fight against the mafias and in building a better future.

Together we can really make a difference and Roma Tre intends to make its contribution starting from its own classrooms.
