The global computer market, both desktop and portable, closed 2023 down 8.8% year-on-year.
This is the worst data since International Data Corporation analysts have been following the sector.
For IDC, however, there are many factors that point to a recovery, so much so that the last quarter of last year, from October to December, recorded a 6.1% increase in shipments.
A reversal of trend after almost a year and a half of continuous declines, with the expected benefit from new computer models with artificial intelligence features on board.
During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, dozens of manufacturers, including Asus, Acer, Dell and Lenovo, announced the arrival of a next generation of PCs with AI, and Microsoft, which is banking heavily on Copilot's artificial intelligence , will present the new Surfaces on March 21st, with a button dedicated to the chatbot.
“For much of 2023, the market has been constrained by budget cuts and inventory issues,” explains IDC.
"The Covid-19 pandemic initially helped stimulate demand, but later contributed to a glut of shipments. The first half of 2023 then saw a sharp contraction due to weak demand and unsold inventory."
In terms of individual manufacturers, Dell remains in first place in terms of shipments, followed by HP and Lenovo.
As Microsoft approaches the end of support for Windows 10 in 2025, analysts expect a push in the purchase of new PCs, especially by companies.
"The expansion in the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace will do the rest - they conclude - with the expansion to many more use cases and the opportunity to make the most of the possibilities offered by AI".
