Highlights: Pharmacists advise: Get vaccinated against ticks. Ticks can transmit tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) - a dangerous inflammation of the brain and meninges. Because of the mild temperatures, ticks are now active all year round. People who spend a lot of time outdoors due to work or leisure activities, such as agricultural workers, forestry workers, hikers, cyclists, campers and dog owners, are particularly at risk. The sooner you remove the tick, the lower the risk that it will pass on pathogens.

Ticks can transmit tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) - a dangerous inflammation of the brain and meninges.

Pharmacists in the district recommend vaccination.

District

– Because of the mild temperatures, ticks are now active all year round.

Almost all parts of Bavaria are at risk for tick-borne tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).

Bernd Grünberg, spokesman for the pharmacists in the Ebersberg district, therefore recommends vaccination.

“TBE cannot be treated, so a vaccination is currently the only safe way to protect yourself from it.”

Who should get vaccinated?

People who live in a risk area or plan to go on holiday there should be particularly vaccinated.

People who spend a lot of time outdoors due to work or leisure activities, such as agricultural workers, forestry workers, hikers, cyclists, campers and dog owners, are particularly at risk.

At what age can you be vaccinated against TBE?

Special children's vaccines are approved for children aged one year and over.

If children are to be vaccinated, I recommend that parents seek good advice from their pediatrician.

What is always crucial is whether a child spends a lot of time outdoors in risk areas.

Since children usually spend a lot of time outside, they are particularly at risk of tick bites.

How do you protect yourself from a tick bite?

It's best to stay away from ticks' favorite places, such as tall grass, and wear long, light-colored clothing in the forest so that you can immediately recognize the animals.

If possible, you should pull the stockings over your pants so that the ticks don't get to the skin under the pant legs.

Tick repellents also offer temporary protection.

Some of these agents can also be applied to clothing.

These products are not approved for every age group and may e.g.

B. should not be used on infants.

It's best to ask your pharmacy for advice on which remedy is right for you.

It is also important to examine your body thoroughly after spending time outdoors.

Ticks particularly like to bite the hairline, ears, neck, armpits, belly button, genital area or back of the knee.

Despite all the precautionary measures: sometimes a tick still gets you.

How do you get rid of them?

Basically, the sooner you remove the tick, the lower the risk that it will pass on pathogens.

Use tweezers, pliers or a loop to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull it out vertically in a controlled movement.

Do not turn the tick or grab it by its soaked body.

After the tick has been completely removed, it is best to disinfect the bite site with an iodine ointment.

Under no circumstances should you try to kill the tick with oil, glue, nail polish or similar, because in its death throes it secretes saliva into the wound.

Then it can even transmit pathogens.

After a tick bite, it is advisable to keep an eye on the skin area for about six weeks.

If you have a red color, fever, fatigue, headache or body aches, you should definitely see your doctor.
