Now there is even talk of expropriation: the strange life of its own at the Kranzberg summit house raises questions in Mittenwald.

Especially since the owner of this dream property continues to play the role of the great unknown.

Mittenwald

– The spring wind blows icy at around 1300 meters above sea level.

Hikers won't find a warm room in the Kranzberg summit house - locked doors, radio silence.

The kitchen has been cold there for almost eight years.

No activity, no guests – just mysterious and eerie silence.

When will the people of Mittenwald actually get their beloved mountain restaurant back?

That's what Alexander Brunner from the tourism association wanted to know a few days ago at the Kranzberg symposium in the Hotel Post.

The textile entrepreneur was drilling into an open wound.

Cultural group chairman Wolfgang Schwind immediately felt compelled to comment.

“It is a mystery to me that there is endless black construction up there,” was the harsh criticism of the highly decorated structural engineer.

But Schwind didn't stop there: “You have to think about whether this is still legal.” Yes, even the ugly word expropriation made the rounds in the mailroom.

“It is the responsibility of the responsible authorities,” said Mayor Enrico Corongiu (SPD) in his reply to the higher-level district office.

Exactly the right keyword for former CSU councilor Ludwig Knilling.

“The community didn’t miss a beat,” emphasized the “Kuin-Luggi”.

“She has no control over it, it’s private.” Then Knilling becomes even clearer: “That’s the district office’s sleepiness!

They don't dare there, it's the same on the Kranzberg as it is in the Karwendel.” He is alluding to the often criticized approach of the district authorities in various buildings on the Karwendelbahn.

But what is the current status on the Mittenwalder Sonnenberg?

The fact is: According to reports, an entrepreneur from Munich purchased the summit house, which closed at the end of 2016, some time ago.

Very few people in Mittenwald know him.

The man obviously shies away from publicity.

Once again he has not responded to a Tagblatt request.

It was a reasonable atmosphere for discussion.

Mayor Enrico Corongiu

Does the mayor know him?

Yes.

But according to him, the last personal meeting was at least two years ago.

“It was a reasonable atmosphere for discussions,” recalls Corongiu, who said he had the impression back then that his counterpart in Munich was being honest about the Kranzberg project.

But it is also a fact: There was always a lot of construction activity up there - until autumn 2023. Then the district office imposed a construction freeze.

And what is the current status quo?

“The construction work has been formally stopped with a notice,” says authority spokesman Stephan Scharf.

According to him, a further on-site inspection came to the conclusion that work continued after the district office request was served.

“The threatened penalty payment was therefore declared due and a further higher penalty payment was threatened.” According to Scharf, during further on-site visits, colleagues came to the conclusion that no more construction work had taken place since then.

The addressee of the notice was the entrepreneur in question from Munich.

“We cannot answer definitively whether the person is still the owner, as the data in our software is only updated several months late.” To date, the district office has not received a written application from the building applicant.

After all, there is said to have been a personal meeting with him.

“There was a discussion on site,” confirms Scharf.
