A Mexican citizen who was detained in Qatar for being gay could not be released on bail, after that request was denied during a hearing of just three minutes last Wednesday.
According to statements from his brother, who indicated that the decision was contested, Manuel Guerrero Aviña will have another hearing next Sunday, March 17, reported the newspaper El Universal.

During a meeting with the press, Manuel Guerrero Enrique, brother of the detainee, revealed that according to the prosecutor in the case, more time is necessary to carry out the entire investigation.
“The judge determined that bail was not appropriate and that he should continue for at least 30 more days in this provisional prison while the investigation continues,” said Guerrero Aviña, quoted by the Mexican newspaper.
There is no specific accusation against Guerrero Aviña and, his brother stated,
he does not have enough medication
to treat his condition.

“He is not receiving a single retroviral pill from the government of Qatar, the only ones he has been able to receive are those he owns, which cannot last the rest of the month,” he said, quoted by the newspaper Milenio.

He assured that his brother "is at risk" and denounced that his human rights have been violated.
“It is, in the end, an arrest that remains arbitrary,” he stressed.
Guerrero Aviña was arrested on February 4 after being the victim of deception while using the Grinder dating application, he explained, adding that he did not have access to legal advice for 20 days.
Members of the LGBT+ community have stated that Guerrero was the victim of a common operation in countries where homosexuality is criminalized, Milenio reported.

According to reports, Qatar police created a fake profile on the Grindr platform to take Guerrero on a fake date and arrest him.
He said his brother has suffered further acts of repression as a result of the global campaign on his behalf.
At this time, he specified, he does not have the right to visits, correspondence, books or hygiene products.
Enrique Guerrero recognized the diplomatic efforts that Mexico and the United Kingdom have made but declared: “They do not seem sufficient.”
“The only acceptable response is for Manuel to be repatriated,” he stressed.
