Puchheim - Water is essential for all of our survival.

Climate change, population growth and global change are increasingly influencing the availability and quality of water.

That is why World Water Day was established at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 on March 22nd, which is dedicated to the vital resource of water.

This year, the day of action launched by the United Nations has the motto “Water for Peace”.

Water is our most important staple food.

Not everyone has access to sufficient clean water.

World Water Day is intended to draw attention to this important raw material and thus contribute to fair and sustainable use.

“Think globally – act locally”.

Gröbenbach was increasingly dry

In recent years, the effects of climate change on our waters have also been clearly visible.

Gröbenbach and Starzelbach had been dry for a long period of time.

However, the streams are habitat for plants and animals.

At the same time, they also represent lifelines that connect different biotopes.

“There are no immediate measures to prevent the streams from drying out, but we can still make a contribution to improving the situation by planting trees on the banks,” says Ursula Sesterhenn from the city of Puchheim.

Tree planting event on March 22nd

For this reason, the environmental office and horticulture department of the city of Puchheim want to plant thirty black alders on the banks of the Gröbenbach on Water Day on Friday, March 22nd.

The people of Puchheim are invited to this.

It starts at 2 p.m., the meeting point is the Spieglwehr in Puchheim-Ort.

Please bring gardening gloves and – if possible – a spade.

In the future, the trees will provide sufficient shade for the water so that the water heats up less.

This in turn benefits the fish that live there.

The roots also help to fortify the bank and provide shelter for fish.

Nico Manz, river master at the water management office, who supports the planting campaign with advice and action, also provides information about the importance of these and other measures on the water.
