Six new members: More and more young people and women are joining the Forstern Warrior Association.

Forstern - While other clubs are struggling with a loss of membership, the Forstern Warrior and Reservist Association was able to welcome six new citizens into its ranks - "of which more women than men" and quite young people, said chairman Stefan Ganghofer at the annual general meeting in the Hirschbachwirt and said: “That’s a good thing, because we need new blood so that the club can survive.” It has a total of 162 members, including two war veterans.

Maria Els, chairwoman of the Upper Bavaria district association of the German War Graves Commission, was also pleased about this positive development.

The average age in military associations at the federal level is 72 years.

The members shrank from 143,000 to 80,000 between 2012 and 2022.

In order to stop this trend, countermeasures must be taken, which is happening in an exemplary manner in Forstern, especially since peace work is a task for society as a whole, regardless of age and gender.

Els said that only thanks to “active local associations like Forstern” results like the 2023 collection for war graves care were possible - 1.83 million euros across Bavaria, which corresponds to at least 85 percent of the amount in the pre-Corona year 2019.

Upper Bavaria alone contributed 710,000 euros - "that makes me very proud," said Els. Forstern contributed 3,684.10 euros - according to Ganghofer, the best result since Corona, since the appeal for donations was sent by post.

When looking back on 2023, Ganghofer was pleased that the club had two tables full at the founding party of the Forstern fire department.

And on Corpus Christi “we are always well represented”.

The excursion took us to Inzell – “we always try to find a program for young and old, but the participants are primarily interested in advice.”

This is the eleventh year that Remembrance Day has taken place on the evening before, and the association is maintaining this.

What the chairman regretted: “There are over 100 names on the war memorial, and then maybe 40 people come to Remembrance Day, half of them from the clubs.” Remember, commemorate and warn - a day like Remembrance Day is even more important today than it was before few years.

Ganghofer emphasized: “We are not glorifying war, even if some people think so with our club name.” Maria Els also took up this idea: “These are not the eternal ones or those glorifying war.”

Mayor Rainer Streu looked back and said that 25 years ago, shortly before the 80th anniversary of the company's founding, many young people joined the company through advertising from Käsmeier Wast (†).

This was also shown by the list of names of the members who were now honored for 25 years of loyalty to the club, including Streu himself. Looking at the group of young, older and “somewhat middle-aged” members, he said: “This club doesn't have a gray beard. “Many events take place, for which the mayor thanked Ganghofer and the entire board.

This year we want to take part in the local stick shooting tournament (May 18th), Corpus Christi (May 30th) and the church service on Women's Day (August 15th).

There is no destination yet for the trip on September 28th.

On November 10th there will be a memorial service in Gmund am Tegernsee.

Remembrance Day (November 16th) and Christmas tree auction (December 14th) complete the dates.

They would also like to show a film about Josef Kirmeier, who died in 2021, and his experiences in the Navy in the Second World War.

The meeting also unanimously decided to increase the annual membership fee from six to ten euros.
