School is changing.

The ravages of time are already taking their toll on frontal teaching, but other 'customs' are also changing.

For example, at the Weil elementary and middle school, which is taking part in a school experiment.

Because – like going to school on Monday morning?

This is normal at Weil elementary and middle school.

Here the children and young people first attend the “Arrival Time”, a course that is partly run by students for students.

It is part of a school trial for which Weil was selected as one of three middle schools in the whole of Bavaria.

“Effective Sustainability – InnoLab N” is the somewhat unwieldy name of the school experiment run by the Bavarian Education Pact Foundation.

It is one of the large school development projects supported by the Ministry of Culture.

Just over half of the three-year period is over.

What has been implemented since then, what has proven successful and what less so - this is what the school management, teachers and students recently reported on at an information event in front of representatives of the school authority and the communities involved in the Weil school association.

The experiences with the arrival time mentioned at the beginning are extremely positive.

The elective courses each last around six weeks and offer a wide range of topics - from model building to yoga, football and boxing to sign language.

There are a total of 32 courses, almost half of which are taught by young people from the 8th grade onwards.

“It’s really nice to teach the children something,” reports one of the tutors.

The young people take their task seriously, learn to take responsibility and gain self-confidence.

The atmosphere at the school has also benefited.

“There are never any arguments during the arrival time.”

Strengthening self-confidence, encouraging joy in helping to shape things and making decisions – this is all the more important in middle school because the students “do not see themselves in the role of leader and decision-maker,” reports class leader Janis Preuth.

In order to strengthen political education at the school, she was with a group of students in the state parliament and would like to establish more discussions with politicians at the school - with the aim of "raising a generation that does not feel left behind."

Another major InnoLab project is “Learning through Engagement” (LDE).

In the coming school year, the eighth graders will get involved in a very specific way as part of volunteer weeks - with clubs, social institutions and other cooperation partners.

The teachers are grateful for the school assistant Cordelia Doukas, who was also able to be hired as part of the school experiment.

According to Rector Christian Geus, it would be normal in every company to have someone like her: an employee for organizational tasks that cannot be taken over by the secretariat.

Relieve teachers

Doukas ensures that speakers come to the school.

She cooperates with career advisors and organizes internships for eighth graders.

She plans day trips, school trips and graduation trips, puts together programs and gets tickets.

Teachers usually have to do all of this in addition to their actual work.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is another component of the school trial.

This is about topics such as sustainable fashion, avoiding food waste and non-violent communication.

The ESD time has been modified several times since it started, reports teacher Matthias Lutz.

“Fifth and ninth graders thinking about a project together didn’t work that way.” The topics are now specified by the teachers and the number of hours has been reduced from four to two.

That's how it's going well.

“The children benefit immensely,” says co-teacher Holger Stirner.

“The school experiment relies on experience, and we are not afraid to throw things out of the window,” emphasizes deputy principal Tanja Bellinger.

“I'm surprised at what you've already achieved,” says the hamlet's mayor Christian Bolz, impressed.

Headmaster Geus asks the town hall leaders present to make clubs and social institutions aware of the school's volunteer project.

“It is our most ambitious and important project.

We need a large network for this.”
