Sahra Wagenknecht has high goals for her BSW party.

She does not rule out running for chancellor.

She can also imagine an unusual coalition in Saxony.

Berlin – Just a few months ago, ex-left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht founded her new party BSW.

And according to surveys, the “Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance” can expect to enter several state parliaments and the Bundestag.

This apparently awakens the 54-year-old's ambition: She now told the

Rheinische Post

that she has not completely ruled out running for chancellor in the 2020 federal elections.

“We’ll talk about that when we know where we stand at the end of the year,” said the former left-wing politician.

“We have good surveys and high potential, but we should also stay on the carpet,” said Wagenknecht.

Oskar Lafontaine's wife left the Left at the end of October 2023 and founded a new party, the “Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht”.

Wagenknecht praises Kretschmer (CDU) as a possible coalition partner in Saxony

The BSW is hoping for strong election results in the European elections on June 9th and in the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg in September.

Wagenknecht confirmed that she could possibly imagine working with the CDU in Saxony.

“Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer in Saxony, for example, is actually one of the few who supports our position that energy prices must fall and that we need a foreign trade policy that serves our interests,” emphasized Wagenknecht.

She added: “When we become strong enough to co-create new policies with others, we will enter into a coalition.

We are not available as a majority procurer for 'business as usual'.”

Saxony's CDU Prime Minister Kretschmer leaves his stance on Wagenknecht's party open

Saxony's CDU Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer deviates from his party's line by considering the sanctions against Russia a strategic mistake and has already spoken about the need to "freeze" the war in Ukraine.

Sahra Wagenknecht, however, has called for a change of course in the West, especially in view of the election in Russia.

The CDU Prime Minister is currently in a coalition with the SPD and the Greens, but has emphasized that he would like a coalition without the Greens after the state elections on September 1, 2024.

Kretschmer has so far left it open whether he can imagine a coalition with Wagenknecht's BSW.

There is an incompatibility decision in the CDU regarding a coalition with the AfD, but also with the Left.
