The local council can imagine a new childcare location on the “Dürnbacher Feld” on Finsterwalder Straße in the Dürnbach district of Gmund.

There is a lack of kindergarten and daycare places in the municipality of Gmund.
An interim solution with containers now enables four additional groups.
Gmund – “Determining the right need is like looking a little bit into the crystal ball,” said Mayor Alfons Besel, opening the topic of child care at the most recent municipal council meeting in Gmund.
The head of the town hall repeatedly has conversations with “sometimes desperate parents” who cannot get a childcare place for their offspring.
Child care in Gmund: demand will increase sharply
The community currently has 42 crèche places, 147 kindergarten places and ten - in the future 15 - places in the play area.
In the past 20 years, around 50 to 55 new children were born in Gmund every year; in 2023 there were only 20 children.
It is difficult to say whether the decline in birth rates was a new trend or just an outlier.
“What is certain, however, is that there is currently only a demand for care of around 35 percent, but the need for care will rise to 80 to 90 percent,” explained Besel.
The situation is almost dramatic, especially at daycare centers: in the short term there will be a shortage of up to 20 places, and four more groups will be needed for the next few years.
“The good news, however, is that as things currently stand, all children will get a place in daycare this year,” announced Besel.
Due to the high birth rate in 2021, an additional group will also be needed in the kindergarten from the 2024/2025 school year.
Intermediate solution via container
As an interim solution, a container facility with four group rooms and additional rooms will be implemented in which a group from the Pius Children's Home will also be accommodated.
The reason for this is water damage in the basement of the building.
The proposed location for this was the area in the southern part of Bichlmaierstrasse/Tölzer Strasse.
As a permanent solution, the municipal administration is already looking for a suitable location for a new building, but is already favoring the “Dürnbacher Feld” on Finsterwalder Straße.
Florian Floßmann (FWG) was somewhat skeptical about the container location: “Have they really thought about the parking situation?” He feared that the already increased volume of traffic during peak hours would increase even further.
But the head of the town hall was able to reassure someone that access and exit would then also be possible via Tölzer Straße.
Johann Schmid (SPD) also insisted on the urgency of the containers, as they would bring equalization in the short term.
Floßmann's party colleague Christine Zierer was completely against Bichlmaierstrasse: “The containers are not great, but we need them now.
But why don’t we set it up on Finsterwalder Straße right away, then we would already have the play equipment there and people would be prepared for it when construction begins.”

The location of the containers is checked
As much as the local council agreed on the importance of the containers, they were hesitant about the location of the planned new building.
“We should give the starting signal now and instruct the administration to examine the location.
By the time the results are in, it will definitely be spring 2025 - then we will see whether the low birth rate last year was an exception or not," suggested Georg Rabl (FWG).
Floßmann even asked whether it was necessary to vote on it at this meeting.
In order to “bring the opinions together,” as Besel emphasized, the proposed resolution on the new building should be changed slightly.
The municipality does not want to immediately issue a construction contract for the Dürnbacher Feld, but instead wants to have everything checked by the administration first.
The resolution was approved with three votes against.
The local council voted 14 votes to six for the interim container solution - but with the Dürnbacher Feld location.
