Before the Erlangen animal shelter had even opened, he was already sitting there: the Great Dane “Gustav” was left to the employees, tied to a fence.

He is not the only case.

Erlangen – It was on Tuesday morning, March 12th, when animal keeper Tim Schwarz made his way to the Erlangen animal shelter.

Once there, his working day started differently than expected: there was an abandoned dog sitting in front of the animal shelter, tied to a fence.

There was no trace of the owner, not even a message was left with the male dog.

Abandoned dog shows problems typical of the breed

“Abandoning animals is a criminal offense,” the animal shelter explains to the news portal

infranken.de

.

No animal deserves to be treated like that.

The dog – presumably a Great Dane – that zookeeper Schwarz took into care that morning was “not in good health,” the animal shelter explains.

As is usual with the breed, the male dog also struggled with breathing problems, as well as skin problems and swollen ears.

The Erlangen animal shelter attributes the latter to an allergy that was exacerbated by poor nutrition.

Sad fate in Erlangen: Great Dane “Gustav” was found in front of the Erlangen animal shelter on Tuesday morning, March 12th.

He was abandoned there without explanation.

Animals are repeatedly found in front of the animal shelter

According to

infranken.de

, during investigations the animal shelter found out that “Gustav,” as they named the male dog, had to be tied to the fence before 6:30 a.m. that Tuesday morning.

Construction workers who were already working nearby at that time confirmed this to the employees.

For zookeeper Schwarz and his colleagues, “Gustav” is not the first case.

“It is very bad for the animal and of course for us too.

This has happened two or three times in my career,” Schwarz told

infranken.de

.

“No animal deserves to be tied to the fence so carelessly.”

Animal keepers hope for attentive neighbors

According to the animal shelter, the chances of finding the owner are slim.

The male is chipped but not registered.

That makes it difficult.

The animal shelter assumes that “probably nothing more will be done” in this matter, but the employees continue to hope and are relying above all on attentive people who could provide information.

“Maybe a neighbor who no longer sees Gustav around,” said the zookeeper.

Dog “Gustav” simply abandoned: animal shelter tries to take care of his “broken heart”

For now, however, the Erlangen animal shelter is “Gustav’s” new home.

“Poor animal,” adds Schwarz in an interview with

infranken.de

.

“We are trying to look after his health and his broken heart.” The animal shelter is still undecided about the exact breed: “Gustav” is too small for an English bulldog.

Either way, it's a Great Dane - the male currently weighs a good 20 kilograms.

Because of his allergy, he needs “special food”, and he is “uncastrated, untrained” and “two to three years old”, the animal rights activists estimate.
