The head of Guinea's national electricity company has been fired, Guinean authorities announced on Saturday, after repeated power cuts.
The general director of the Electricité de Guinée (EDG) company, Laye Sékou Camara, and his two deputies, Fodé Soumah and Abdoulaye Koné, were dismissed, according to a decree signed by the head of the junta, General Mamadi Doumbouya.
These dismissals come after power cuts in this poor country despite its considerable mineral and natural resources.
These incidents sparked protests in this military-led country.
The new Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah declared to the press on Friday that
“those responsible for this situation (linked to the cuts) owe us explanations and everyone must assume their share of responsibility”
.
“Incident on a high voltage pylon”
Clashes broke out between demonstrators and security forces in Conakry on Thursday evening after a power outage which plunged a large part of the city into darkness, according to an AFP correspondent.
The Electricité de Guinée company explained the outage in a press release by
“an incident on a high voltage pylon”
.
Two children aged eight and 14 were shot and killed on Tuesday in Kindia, 130 km east of Conakry, during demonstrations against repeated power cuts.
Guinea experiences fuel shortages and frequent power cuts.
The country is also sinking into political crisis.
Prime Minister Bah acknowledged this week that the military who seized power by force in 2021 are expected to hold it until at least 2025 and break their commitment to leave by the end of 2024.
