The planned killing of some baboons in the Nuremberg Zoo has caused a stir in recent weeks.

And even resulted in sit-ins by animal rights activists.

Now Hollywood is getting involved too.

Nuremberg – The Nuremberg Zoo is a magnet for visitors.

But he has been under public criticism for some time now.

At the beginning of February, the zoo announced that it would euthanize several Guinea baboons.

The group had become too large, which would cause some problems, including with the social structures of the population.

The project sparked anger and indignation - sit-ins, protests and media outcry followed.

Now even prominent voices from Hollywood joined the debate.

From Hollywood: Kaulitz twins criticize Nuremberg Zoo

Tom and Bill Kaulitz, heads of the well-known German band

Tokio Hotel, have been running the

podcast for some time .

.

Once a week they talk about current events and stories from Hollywood - or from Nuremberg.

Last Wednesday, March 13th, the two of them commented

on the Nuremberg Zoo's plans in the 42nd minute of the new podcast episode

“Really, that makes me really angry”: Gemini expresses horror

The guitarist Tom first reads out a press report about the planned killing of the baboons, warning Bill: “It will shock you”.

Tom could probably have guessed his twin brother's reaction, but he was horrified: "That's outrageous."

According to Bill, it is incomprehensible why there are no laws in Germany that prohibit planned killing.

Tom also expresses his solidarity with the protesters who are campaigning against the euthanasia of animals: “Of course you have to draw attention to yourself, otherwise no one will care about it.” He criticizes the fact that they are described as “radical” and thanks them them for their efforts.

Bill also supports the protests in front of the zoo: “Next time I’ll sit there too.”

Tom further criticizes the fact that the zoo director Dr.

Dag Encke can decide alone that the monkeys should be killed.

For the singer Bill it is generally incomprehensible that some people still defend zoos.

“Really, that makes me really angry,” Tom concludes, expressing his indignation.

His twin brother agrees with this statement.

Nuremberg Zoo on Kaulitz Statements: “Understanding that it is difficult for many people”

The Nuremberg Zoo is now taking a stand on these allegations: “We understand that it is difficult for many people to understand the decision and that the argumentation initially appears paradoxical.” Those responsible are fundamentally prepared to enter into the discourse on difficult topics – but only in this regard in the context of a professional discussion – to go.

“In the case of insults or threats, as we sometimes experience on social media, but also during the protests on site, we see no possibility of this,” the zoo explains further when asked by the editorial team.

In addition, it is crucial for the dialogue that the critics obtain comprehensive information and form a considered opinion.

“In our opinion, the repetition of slogans, accusations and catchphrases does not help to find solutions,” emphasizes the zoo.

Zoo justifies killing monkeys

And the zoo also addresses the planned killing of the baboons – and possible alternatives to it.

Three institutions have agreed to take over the baboons.

The zoo is currently inquiring about the keeping and transfer conditions of the respective institutions - but is still waiting for feedback.

In contrast to relocating the animals, releasing the monkeys into the wild is not an option as there are no suitable areas in the areas of origin, explains the zoo.

Stopping reproduction completely is also not an alternative course of action.

“We find ourselves in a man-made dilemma when it comes to species conservation.

This requires us to make decisions that don't feel good, but that, from our point of view, are sensible.

Giving away animals would not solve this fundamental dilemma, but would only delay it.

In our opinion, there will only be a real alternative if there is a well-organized, functioning release program in place,” is how the Nuremberg Zoo justifies its plan.
