Georg Steer campaigned politically for the interests of his fellow citizens for 42 years.

He has now died at the age of 89.

Olching - Georg Steer was Olching's only old city councilor.

The title doesn't actually exist, but Mayor Andreas Magg coined it for the deserving local politician who stood up for the interests of his fellow citizens in the municipal council and later in the city council - for a full 42 years.

Olching and its people were close to Steer's heart.

He cared about those who were not on the sunny side - perhaps because he knew what that felt like.

Steer, born in November 1934, grew up in Olching as one of three children.

He lost his father when he was just nine years old, and a sister died when he was a toddler.

Coppersmith

Steer had to help early and earn money.

After school, he completed an apprenticeship as a coppersmith and later further training in the areas of heating and plumbing, becoming a master craftsman and service manager.

As an active trade unionist, he was invited by the Olching SPD to be on their candidate list in the run-up to the 1972 local elections.

The jump into the local council worked at the first attempt.

From then on, “Oching and politics” completely filled Steer’s life alongside work and family, as daughter Michaela Andersch-Steer explains.

As a child and teenager, she often accompanied her father to appointments.

That rubbed off – today she sits on the city council for the SPD.

Promote community

The desire to support people and promote community runs like a common thread through Steer's local political work.

As a partnership officer, he was responsible for the Olching community partnerships, as a human resources officer for the municipal employees - and as a festival speaker for Olching's largest local party for 24 years.

“It was important to him that people could celebrate together, enjoy being together and forget their worries,” says his daughter.

This also included a beer tasting from the city council beforehand.

“My father sometimes drove ahead to the brewery with the mayor at the time,” remembers Michaela Andersch-Steer.

When the rest of the panel arrived, the two men already had a certain head start on the tasting.

France

In his private life, Steer enjoyed traveling to France, but he even preferred traveling to his wife Hildegard's Upper Silesian homeland.

He met her when he was 18 at a carnival ball in Munich.

Two daughters crowned their marital happiness, and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren have since been added.

However, Georg Steer lost his wife early.

At the age of 64, the widower once again found new happiness in the form of Mathilde Obermeier - at a folk festival, of course.

Olching's former city councilor has now died after a short, serious illness.

He was 89 years old.
