Chemnitz - The Saxon Green Alliance is going into the state elections on September 1st with a top trio.

Delegates at a state party conference in Chemnitz elected Justice Minister Katja Meier in first place on the state list with 92.79 percent of the vote.

He is followed by Environment and Energy Minister Wolfram Günther with 91.3 percent and parliamentary group leader Franziska Schubert with 80 percent.

In addition, 27 additional places on the list should be allocated.

The first battle vote took place for 8th place on the list. The co-state chairwoman Marie Müser lost to her competitor Markus Scholz.

According to a party spokesman, Müser then no longer wanted to take part in the election for another place on the list.

In her application speech, Meier highlighted the mobility transition, climate protection and a strong democracy.

“September 1st is about freedom, humanity and justice.”

Environment Minister Günther emphasized the successes of the Greens in Saxony in recent years in the areas of environmental and nature conservation and the energy transition.

“We have transformed Saxony from a brown coal country to a renewable energy country.”

Franziska Schuber was not present because she is about to give birth to her child.

In the run-up to the party conference, the Greens had already expressed their desire to remain in government.

In contrast, Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) had emphasized several times that he would ideally like to continue to govern without the Greens.

In the 2019 state election, the Greens in Saxony received 8.6 percent of the vote.

In current surveys they are currently at seven percent.

According to its own information, the party currently has 3,600 members in Saxony.

In a recorded video message, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck predicted a difficult election campaign in Saxony.

“The political culture in Germany is roughened, but rarely in places as roughened as in Saxony,” he emphasized.

In the past five years, the Greens in Saxony have achieved numerous successes in a difficult government coalition.

The Greens must remain a discourse party that brings together different opinions and draws its strength from civil society.
