Although winter is not yet over in the Italian Alps, the bears are perking up.

One has now run in front of a driver's car near Lake Garda.

Passo di Maniva - In the darkness, a young woman driving with an acquaintance in the passenger seat is driving on provincial road 345, which leads from the Italian city of Brescia through the Alpine valleys of the Tre Valli to the Maniva Pass, to Lake Idro and on to Lake Garda.

Suddenly a shadow breaks out of the darkness and appears in the headlights: an animal trots in front of the car, runs a few dozen meters in front of the car and then disappears over the embankment into the forest.

The women can't believe their eyes: it's a bear!

The passenger quickly takes out her cell phone and films the incredible encounter.

Sighting near Lake Garda: Women alert the forest guard and the Italian police

It happened late on Wednesday evening: the passenger, who like the driver comes from the town of San Colombano, filmed the three-year-old animal and then alerted the forestry guard and the police of the Lombardy province.

As can be seen from the young women's video, which is going viral on social media, the young bear travels a few meters on the asphalt before disappearing into the forest and losing the trail.

According to

bsnews.it,

it was the first sighting of a bear in the Brescia area since the beginning of 2024 and the animal has not yet been officially registered.

“There is currently not much information about it and the inspection carried out in the area did not produce any useful results,” it said.

It is speculated that the bear was trying to cross the Maniva Pass to another area, but last week's snowstorm blocked the crossing.

The first bear sighting in the Italian province this year

According to the Brescia Provincial Police, last year there were 52 reports from different areas of the Brescia region (Alto Garda, Valsabbia, Valtrompia and Valcamonica).

However, not all reports have been confirmed, also because these specimens are capable of traveling long distances in a short time.

Actually, bears hibernate, but this year the season was too mild, although a cold front since the beginning of the month had caused a layer of snow up to meters high.

At the beginning of February, a bear chased hikers in neighboring Trentino.

The province ordered the shooting, which caused controversy.
