In serious accidents, the fire brigade often has to be called in to free the injured person.

Like all fire departments, the fire fighters from Puchheim-Ort also have to train this procedure regularly.

Time and again, people are trapped in their cars in serious accidents.

They then have to be freed by the fire department.

This procedure must be practiced.

But the rescuers are now having big problems getting scrap cars for training.

Puchheim-Ort – The B 2 is sometimes a dangerous place.

The cars travel on the federal highway at up to 100 kilometers per hour – sometimes even faster.

A small mistake or a careless overtaking maneuver is enough for a catastrophe to occur.

Unfortunately, this is not an unknown scenario for the rescuers from the Puchheim-Ort fire department.

They repeatedly have to move out to get victims out of their cars after head-on accidents.

But training for such an emergency is increasingly being slowed down.

Scrap prices too high

“We no longer get junk cars for practice,” says Commander Daniel Wanner.

He sees the high scrap prices as the reason.

Because disposal companies could make good money with old cars, they were becoming increasingly rare for the fire department.

Things used to be completely different.

Training is extremely important.

“We have to practice how to remove the roof and how to cut away the door,” explains Wanner.

Injured people often have to be freed from the wreck quickly but also as gently as possible.

“You have to know what you’re doing.”

The use of the spreader and scissors must be practiced in real life.

A spreader lifts 65 tons and the rescue shears cut steel as thick as an arm.

“These are not craft scissors,” says Wanner.

The rescuers need to get a feel for the special tool.

The Puchheim-Ortler Weir would need at least two training objects per year.

I would be happy to have more.

“We take everything we get,” says Daniel Wanner.

“The bigger and more stable, the better.” Because that also increases the challenge.

In addition, there are simply a lot of large, heavy and stable cars on the road today.

Cars are becoming more stable and complex

District fire chief Christoph Gasteiger also confirms this.

The Puchheim-Ortler fire department is not alone with a lack of training objects.

All fire departments have this problem.

“That makes us very worried,” says the district fire chief.

Especially given that cars are becoming more and more complex these days, it is extremely important to practice regularly.

Where there used to be a simple metal strut, there are now cables or data lines or airbags installed.

Knowing the technical data is very important.

In Puchheim-Ort you use the whole car for this reason - if you get one.

“We cut up the entire car,” says Commander Daniel Wanner.

In this way, the rescuers could also train their feel for the device.
