Starnberg

- 50 years ago, today's vocational school for child care in Starnberg was still a drawing school.

Since then a lot has happened.

Over the past five decades, around 8,200 students have graduated from the school and it has shaped many generations.

On Monday the vocational school celebrated its 50th anniversary.

There was an exuberant atmosphere among the students present, current and former teachers and guests such as district administrator Stefan Frey, Stefan Pauler (head of vocational schools for the government of Upper Bavaria), Starnberg's deputy mayor Angelika Kammerl, and the five visitors from the partner school in Taiwan.

The students framed the program in a celebratory manner and made music in a rather atypical way: They beat so-called boomwhackers - colorful plastic tubes that are sometimes used for early childhood development - to the beat.

In his speech, District Administrator Frey expressed his gratitude for the vocational school.

Because the municipalities in the district are known to be struggling with the lack of staff in daycare centers.

After all, every child from the age of three is entitled to a place in kindergarten.

For 2026, the federal government also decided on a legal right to all-day care in primary schools.

“I think a lot about how we can properly look after the children,” said Frey.

The district administrator stated that the district's “long-term goal” was to build a center with several schools under one roof.

However, this is not feasible at the moment for several reasons, including financial ones, said Frey when asked.

New concept being tested from 2025 - with more practice

Pauler from the government of Upper Bavaria greatly appreciates the work of childcare workers: “Childcare is characterized by the education of the heart.

They should show empathy, be courageous and courageous.” He announced that a new concept will be tested from the 2025/26 school year.

This stipulates that the two-year training includes more practice and a training allowance from the employer.

So far, the students have been in class for four days and only have an internship once a week in an institution of their own choosing.

Angelika Fränkel, who was not only a teacher at the school but also served as deputy chairwoman of the support association, received great applause.

Fränkel praised: “The special feature of the school is that it always provides very practical training.” She suggested that the training could, for example, include additional qualifications in curative education or that childcare workers could work as supplementary staff in primary schools.

This would make the job more attractive.

Full of enthusiasm, she wanted to immediately set a date with the decision-makers and concretize her ideas.

Fränkel, city councilor for the Green Party in Starnberg, said with a smile: “I am retired, have a lot of time and am happy to provide advice.”

To round off the anniversary celebrations, everyone ate an impressive cake together.
