Less cancer and heart attacks, but more need for care: The district's current health report was now presented at the social committee meeting.

The data is mostly based on the years 2021/22 and is calculated based on cases per 100,000 inhabitants for better comparability.

District – Dr.

Stefan Günther, head of the health department, began by emphasizing the importance of the report for the population: “The numbers collected are indicators of health care in the region.

And this is good.” The average life expectancy is 84.2 years for women and 79.9 for men, slightly higher than in Bavaria.

Even if the birth rate and the proportion of children/young people in the population are increasing, the old age ratio is still high: 38 people older than 65 years of age compared to 100 people between 18 and 64 years of age.

As people age, the need for care also increases.

The trend line 2013 – 2021 shows an overall strong increase in the proportion of people in need of care in the district.

In 2021, 4,048 people had at least care level 1 (Bavaria: 4,393).

Günther: “The need for care is immanent.

This will be our big topic for the future.”

Fewer heart attacks, strokes and cancer

The less favorable age structure compared to Bavaria is reflected in a slightly higher illness rate (20,113 patients treated as inpatients).

The number of heart attacks is above average and the number of strokes is below average. However, the number of heart attacks and strokes treated in hospitals in the district has fallen significantly in recent years.

“The importance of one’s own heart health has reached the population,” explains Günther.

He is also satisfied with the development of new cancer cases in the district.

The trend line for the years 2015-2019 shows an overall sharp decline in the rate of new cases of malignant neoplasms reported.

In 2019, it was 223, well below the Bavarian average (322).

“A sign that the Weilheim-Schongauers have accepted the preventive measures,” said the head of the health department.

High measles vaccination rate

He becomes almost euphoric at the fact that almost 94 percent of school starters are currently vaccinated against measles - also thanks to the Measles Protection Act, which has been consistently monitored by the health department since 2022.

The health report also finds that fewer and fewer children are considered obese when they are examined at school, but as of 2019/20.

In the Weilheim-Schongau district, residents have access to a similar number of doctors in outpatient facilities and public pharmacies compared to Bavaria.

In purely mathematical terms, a doctor in outpatient facilities will provide care to an average of 467 people and a pharmacy to 4,880 people in the Weilheim-Schongau district in 2022.

Due to pharmacy closures, the number jumped by seven percent.

More TBE, Lyme disease and legionella

When it comes to infections such as TBE, Lyme disease, dengue fever or legionella, cases of the disease continue to rise.

Reason: climate change with its warmer temperatures.

“Ticks have always been around.

But now they feel more comfortable,” sums up Günther.

There would also be other TBE strains from Eastern Europe, against which the classic vaccination would protect.

My news

  • Weilheim district council decides whether to increase the district levy to 55 percent

  • There is still little demand for properties in Bachfeld in Peitinglesen

  • Pastor couple Bischoff: Ceremonial introduction to Schongau on Sunday reading

  • In the future, market Sundays in Schongaulesen will only be held half as often

  • Sharp decline in club collections of waste paper/goods in the Murnau region

  • Competition: Read “Mobsibär and the Blueberries”.

The warm weather promotes further opportunities for infection.

Legionella bacteria multiply very well in “lukewarm water” from uninsulated water pipes, for example.

An increase in these diseases is therefore expected.

However, one positive aspect of the infection situation in the district is that MRSA diseases caused by multi-resistant germs have fallen sharply due to the more responsible use of antibiotics and improved hygiene management in hospitals.

There were no reported cases in the Weilheim-Schongau district in 2021/22.

Another interesting fact from the health report is that an above-average number of people had accidents on local roads (603 people compared to 469 across Bavaria).

However, since this has nothing to do with the state of health in the region, Günther did not go into detail about it.
